Dayton Audio Woofer Tester 3 (WT3)

Dayton Audio Woofer Tester 3 (WT3)

I needed the ability to measure loudspeakers parameters and make impedance sweeps quickly and with ease, and the Dayton Audio Woofer Tester 3 (WT3) from Parts Express seemed well suited for these tasks. This woofer tester is advertised as an all-inclusive hardware solution designed to accurately measure the Thiele/Small parameters of a speaker in just a few seconds.

For loudspeaker measurement, the WT3 is clearly the leader for very simple to use. There are no jigs to build and calibration is very simple. Once the supplied software is installed and the WT3 connected to a USB port, you are good to go. Be sure to set the windows volume control to maximum and the balance to the middle as this seems to affect the test results. If you see anomalies in the result such as strange dips, spikes or jagged plots in the results, double check the windows volume control. Also, the Quick Start guide that comes with WT3 makes a point of mentioning to wait at least 90 seconds to allow the WT3 power supplies to stabilize.

Next you will want to calibrate the test leads and the WT3 unit. Calibration of the leads is done by simply connecting the leads together and calibration of the unit is completed by using the supplied calibration resistor (1k-ohm, 1%). The test result seem to be very dependent of the calibration, so use a multi-meter to measure the calibration resistor and enter the value manually into the software. The manual indicates that completing calibration of both test leads and the WT3 unit is essential to ensure accurate results.

The software is very intuitive to use and has a number of features, including the ability to export the test results and multiple plot capabilities.

I have compared results of the WT3 against LIMP (part of the ARTA package) and there is a good correlation between the two. Overall, the WT3 seems to be an accurate and very easy to use package for loudspeaker measurement. At only $100, it can be fit into most DIY Audio budgets. The Dayton Audio Woofer Tester 3 (WT3) is available from Parts Express.

Inductor and Resistor Measurement with WT3

In addition to measuring drivers, WT3 can be used to measure inductors and resistors. I have confirmed that this works by checking three inductors of known value and comparing the test results against a Sencore LC75 meter. Below is a snippet from the Parts Express Tech Talk forum regarding inductor and resistor measurement.
