6EM7_Single_Ended_Triode_Amplifier.jpg“Paris†– 6EM7 Dual Mono Integrated Amplifier2887 viewsWhat started as a forum thread discussion (6EM7 power amp) ended in the construction of a 6EM7 (Sylvania tube) integrated triode amplifier. I used dual mono construction with two power transformers, two 5Y3 rectifier tubes and two separate power filter stages but with a shared single stage preamp. There is a single EMI/RFI power filter feeding both power supplies. Two chokes and two 15W Edcor audio output transformers are in the base of the enclosure. An Alps blue velvet pot after the preamp stage (4S Universal) controls volume to the power amp section. The colour is Sungold and the base Mirbue. The amp has a very detailed mid-range and produces about 2W.

PinotAssembleIISS.jpg6AS7 SET amplifier with JAN 5R4 rectifier tube2884 viewsThis compact amp is based on an 6AS7 (dual triode), JAN 5R4 (both coke bottle) and 12AX7 driver tube. The top plated is sprayed to match the Edcor OPTs (1.7k/8ohm). The base is solid Mirbeu. Power transformer is Hammond and so is the choke. Component-2-component wiring with no PCB. Silver wire connects gold RCAs to the driver tube. Jensen (0.22uf 630V) copper paper and oil caps join the driver and power stages. The 6AS7 are pushed to 13W dissipation. Bass is heavy and extended, mids and treble highly detailed and sound stage very deep and defined. An extremely good looking and great sounding amp.
Additional information is available in the 6AS7 tube amp from layout to listening forum thread.

BeBampDriver6SN7s.jpgBe Bamp 6SN7 remote driver stage2874 viewsThis is the second of the remote driver stages for the Be Bamp . It uses one 6SN7 on a cast aluminum chassis with a epoxy enamel paint. The finish is Hammered Copper. Again the Russian military caps of foil, paper and oil will be used as the inter-stage caps.
Wire will be cotton coated tinned copper and all silver solder. Socket is ceramic and the tube will be running on 350V HT+.

TeaBoxPreampSmall~0.jpgTwinings Tea Box 12AX7 Tube Preamp with Remote 5Y3 PS2861 viewsThis is my second build of the Twinings Tea Box 12AX7 tube preamps with separate 5Y3 valve rectification. Others I have built used an internal or remote SMPS. This build used the massive and expensive Jensen copper, paper and oil caps. Silver wire, WBT silver solder, Solen Teflon caps (feedback) component-2-component wiring make this an exceptional build. There is no cct. brd. A remote PS with valve rec. (Ozzie 5Y3) and Hammond power transformer and 12H choke provide very clean robust power to the preamp Tea Box.
The sound is very 3D with sound stage deep and wide. The full passion of the music comes through with staggering detail making most instruments (acoustic anyway) sound very different. This build has been commissioned by a very astute audiophile in Denver, Colorado. I know he will be pleased. It goes with well used AWA (Amalgamated Wireless Australasia) 12AX7 valves, rare but sweet sounding.

KiSharnS.jpgretro-thermionic Pinot "KiSharn" SET 6AS72856 viewsThough only a small difference between this photo and the last the Pinot "KiSharn" continues to impress and compete well against commercial amplifiers costing AU$5K. I am now running it with SED Wing “C†tubes which look and sound very close to the United Electronics tubes it started with. An audibly impressive amp which belies its functional simplicity.

Chinook_13FD7_SET_Tube_Amp.jpgChinook 13FD7 SET Tube Amplifier2854 viewsThis is the second tube amplifier I have built and of course I'm hooked BIG TIME!! I love it. The tube amplifier is the Chinook (Baby SET, 2.5W/ch) with one 13FD7 per channel and a EM80 for VU meter. OPT are Edcor GXSE10-8-5K. This amp makes for a great sound and vision show ;-)

Jan6418JewelBox.jpgRaytheon JAN6418 sub-mini valve preamp in a Jewelery box2849 viewsNot much to see here except to note this is an extremely "pretty" jewelery box of the timber variety. The box was reduced from $60 to $30 and this purchase prompted me to build the preamp. I like my pretty and cute enclosures. See other images for more detail. The preamp modules are part of a kit from Oatley Electronics Australia but many parts have been upgraded. The back holds a brushed Aluminum bar with the input/output RCAs and power switch. Should battery voltage fall below 6.8V (two lithium 9V batteries power the unit) a led on the cct. brd. will light. Lifting the gold catch and taking a look will disclose this.
The box is heavy and the wood thick and the Makassar timber pattern on the lid makes this a stunning enclosure, especially if you are bored with putting your creations into plain tin boxes. The preamp plays well but the tubes take a few hours to burn in so be warned.
Full details and variations to this tube preamp kit are available on the JAN6418 Valve (Tube) Preamplifier Kit page.

Jan6814HPAmpIISmall.jpgJAN6418 portable Triode Headphone Amp MkII2824 viewsThis is a straight build of the oatley electronics sub-mini headphone driver and preamp. In other builds where the basic cct. brd. is used as a preamp the passive components are upgraded and the PT2308, headphone driver chip, though very good, has been upgraded. Not here. This build uses the stock components that came with the kit. See the JAN6418 Valve (Tube) Preamplifier / Headphone Amp Kit project page for more information and other build variations..

BeBampDStage6SN7ss.jpgBe Bamp 6SN7 remote driver-under the bonnet2804 viewsUnder the bonnet of the new 6SN7 Be Bamp remote driver stage can be seen the Russian 0.47uf paper, foil and oil caps (green) and component layout. The bi-pass caps are low ESR types and the filter cap was snubbed. Only additional wire used was the filament wire and two earth connections. The assembly method was component-2-component wiring. No hook-up wire was used in the signal path at all and the signal path is very short. Tube socket is ceramic with gold plated pin connects.
This driver stage out-performs the original 6N1P stage, to my ears anyhow. Better bass, deeper, better textured sound stage, extended reverb and a warmer sound in the mid-range.

Class-D-SureElectronics-Amp-Inside.jpgClass-D Sure-Electronics Amplifier (Inside)2800 viewsThis is my first DIY Class-D amplifier. The amp is based on a $30 Sure-electronics module. The amplifier modules requires only a 30VDC high current power supply because into 4 ohm it can produce 100Wpc. The enclosure is an off the shelf 2U 19†rack mount type. The power supply has an 18-0-18V, 9A toroidal transformer. A 10A rec bridge, some snubbing caps and 30,000 uF of stage caps make up the power supply. Two selectable inputs provide direct connection to the amp module or connection via an Alp pot and 4 Oz brass knob. Very crisp sounding with good detail... See the forum thread Class D 100W power amp for more information.
