Picture_024.jpg1930s style singled-ended pentode3923 viewsThis is a new amplifier I designed and built using mostly salvaged parts from British electronics of the 1930s and 40s. The valves are all British 4V types, AC/SP3 driver and N41 pentode output. The power supply uses an MU14 rectifier. The loudspeaker is a 1930s energized type - so it also acts as a smoothing filter.

Efficiency is 98db\1W\1M for the woofer section and 105db for the tweeter. The drivers can handle 700W! Box is 33ltr and heavily braced with 4” rear port. Finish is heavily stippled and applied with a roller. Xover is at 2KHz. Bass is not super low and requires a subwoofer for better bass. Speakers work extremely well with my 0.5W 1920s tubed amp. little-amp.jpg50L6GT Tube Amplifier3911 viewsThis little guy is something I came up with when a friend asked me if there was an inexpensive, but decent vacuum tube amplifier he could build. Well, it is low cost and sounds acceptable, but it is dangerous as one side of the AC line is connected to the chassis. Yes, I used a polarized plug, but it also depends on the receptacle being wired correctly... so I recommended that he should build it with an isolation transformer.

It uses two 50L6GT output tubes driven with a 12AX7A. The heaters are series strung with a 68 ohm resistor to take up the remaining 8 volts. The powersupply uses a 1N4005 half-wave rectifier, so it was a bit difficult to filter out the 60 Hz buzz.

For something cheap, it doesn't sound half bad. Though, it doesn't hold a candle to my 6T9 Push-Pull Tube Amplifier!

Where I though the Nelson Pass B1 buffer had excellent bass, the BoZ came in and made bass reproduction even heavier. Not more extended just weightier. Mid range and treble are extended and detailed. The Hammond aluminum cases sure are smart. You need a very, very quiet PS for this preamp. Any hum just leaches right through.

The yellow caps are MPX 0.47uF and 220uF low ESR electrolytics store power from the voltage divider network (virtual ground). The power tubes are the same used in Mig fighter jets as regulator tubes. Don has dropped one on a wooden floor, it bounced and he caught it. Tough tubes. The timber base is made by Don and the top plate is 4mm thick ABS plastic. The power transformers and chokes are well separated from the music making bits. He employed locally made horizontal power transformer, chokes and audio OPTs. The amp is musical and neutral sounding low bass is a little spongy and undefined when added to my all valve system. It produces 15W, not bad from a SET. The front tube is a Sovtek 6SJ7 and the amp is two stage and weighs 40lb! Mark – contributor.

PhonoInside.JPGPhono Preamp Ki.3788 viewsThe cct. brd was assemble and the ABS plastic case drilled ready for assemble. ABS is a very hard plastic to drill. Before assembly the lid, base and sides were lined with heavy tar and foil stick-on shielding. This helps with case dampening also. All gold RCA connections were kept to the rear (see other photos). The chips are the LM833s but the Burr-Brown OPA2134 high performance chip can be directly substituted. The on-board +/- 12V regulated PS is shielded from the rest of the sensitive cct. Additional snubbing was added to the line caps to remove PS noise and chip RF decoupling. Though three different compensation can be selected from the cct. brd by moving two jumpers the lid must be removed to do this. A double pole rotating three position switch could be added to provide this facility externally. The cct. includes a gain control which is accessed from the front and allows easy and silent level adjustment. The sound is natural with no hiss or hum. Easy to build.

To rise the output voltage of the Denon DL-103, I've build this Step-up transformer with two mic transformer from Edcor , I've use cast iron pipe bend with end plugs to make an electromagnetic shield. RCA connectors are recessed in the back of the pipes which are mounted on a black walnut plinth.

Compared to the Nelson Pass BoZ the mid range and treble I feel are more transparent but bass weight is less. The sound is completely un-coloured. This inexpensive simple preamp has a frequency extension from 5Hz to 780kHz and is very PS tolerant.

Here is the finished BoZoaC. Two selectable Inputs on the rear and output on the left side. Small banana sockets on the right allow checking of the internal batteries without lifting the lid. The preamp could be powered through these. BoZoaC appears to have kept the great bass weight and extension of BoZSE with even better mids. Highs are about the same. Frequency range: 6hz -> 200khz. 13Vpp maximum out into 22K with 24V PS. Current draw = 12.5mA.

EL84_PP_6E6P_driver_1.jpgThe Simple EL84 PP version 2 (on steroids) 3736 viewsThis is the second version of my first DIY audio project. I changed the Driver tube to 6E6P strapped as triode with CCS load (IXYS 10m45s - 15mA).
Current sinks LM317 at EL84 cathodes it not grounded but connected to a -24V negative power supply. That gives more gain, less distortion and gives also much more headroom for the output stage.
The coupling caps are 0.22μF PIO JENSEN. I' ll try the russian teflons in the next few days.
This tube amplifier simply rocks.
