Prada_1.jpgPrada OPA627 Preamplifier3523 viewsUsing my daughter's Prada phone box (heavy cardboard) I fashioned this preamplifier around the Bur Brown (high performance) OPA627AP opamp ($AU50). It is a single stage preamp and powered by four lithium 9V batteries for a PS of 18V.

The black knob is solid brass and the attenuator is an Alps Blue Velvet. Gold RCA jacks, silver wire and WBT silver solder are used throughout.

SV101647.JPGOPA2134 Inside the Chip amp preamp II3521 viewsYou can see how compact the boards are. The yellow caps are MPX 0.47uF and 220uF low ESR electrolytics store power from the voltage divider network (virtual ground). Computer stand-off keep the brds. off the case and are fitted with rubber grommets to control cct. resonance and vibration. More details are available at the DIY OPA2134PA Preamplifier Project page.

SV101485.JPGFinished Subwoofer Processor Kit3480 viewsThis analogue OP amp based sub-woofer processor provides a lot of flexibility when it comes to low pass filter adjustment, parametric equalization, sub-sonic filtration, gain and input selection in a slim neat box. But when it comes to set-up and balance with your favorite speakers, there is a lot of work to be done. The kit is from Jaycar Australia.

K-12G-Tube-Ampleifier-Kit-UK.jpgK-12G Tube Amp Kit build from UK3477 viewsHi this is my new build of an S-5 Electronics K-12G tube amplifier. I'm really proud of it and hope it can inspire others.

Transformer covers, knobs, feet, phono plugs and other parts sourced from http://www.mafaudio.com/.
The main transformer case was scratched and they will send another free with my next order. I've found them very easy to deal with. The case is made of pine bought at the local merchants with a plywood top. I used only simple tools.

There are more photos available in my photo library.

Seas-exotic-fullrange-loudspeaker.jpgNew Seas Fullrange Speaker3457 viewsThe new 8" Seas fullrange unit. Not much info available other than it will be release Jan 2008. The magnet does not look all that large, so I suspect it will be a high Q driver.
PhonoInside.JPG
PhonoInside.JPGPhono Preamp Ki.3440 viewsThe cct. brd was assemble and the ABS plastic case drilled ready for assemble. ABS is a very hard plastic to drill. Before assembly the lid, base and sides were lined with heavy tar and foil stick-on shielding. This helps with case dampening also. All gold RCA connections were kept to the rear (see other photos). The chips are the LM833s but the Burr-Brown OPA2134 high performance chip can be directly substituted. The on-board +/- 12V regulated PS is shielded from the rest of the sensitive cct. Additional snubbing was added to the line caps to remove PS noise and chip RF decoupling. Though three different compensation can be selected from the cct. brd by moving two jumpers the lid must be removed to do this. A double pole rotating three position switch could be added to provide this facility externally. The cct. includes a gain control which is accessed from the front and allows easy and silent level adjustment. The sound is natural with no hiss or hum. Easy to build.
Dons6C33C.jpg
Dons6C33C.jpgDon's 6C33C tube amp from Down Under with locally wound OPTs3433 viewsThis beautiful 6c33c amp is not one of mine but belongs to a regular customer of the electronics store I work at. The power tubes are the same used in Mig fighter jets as regulator tubes. Don has dropped one on a wooden floor, it bounced and he caught it. Tough tubes. The timber base is made by Don and the top plate is 4mm thick ABS plastic. The power transformers and chokes are well separated from the music making bits. He employed locally made horizontal power transformer, chokes and audio OPTs. The amp is musical and neutral sounding low bass is a little spongy and undefined when added to my all valve system. It produces 15W, not bad from a SET. The front tube is a Sovtek 6SJ7 and the amp is two stage and weighs 40lb! Mark – contributor.

See this 6c33c tube amplifier thread for more info about this tube.

The choke is a Triad C-14X which is 6H 150 ohm and rated at 200 mA. This amp really runs dead silent - no hum whatsoever with my 93 dB Polk Speakers.

Single-Ended-833-Tube-Amplifier-Monoblock.jpgSingle-Ended 833 Monoblock Tube Amplifier3408 viewsI have built a monoblock 833 SET tube amplifier with zero feedback and a fixed bias. The total power output 125W! Here you can find more photographs: http://img200.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=img1663t.jpg
TSpecialUnderChassis.JPG
TSpecialUnderChassis.JPGUnderside view of the 6T9 baking pan tube amp3403 viewsThe OPTs and printed cct. brd. fit snugly in the thin baking pan chassis making a compact little amp. Drilling such a thin chassis has its challenges and getting all the drilled points to line up with cct. brd. mounting holes can be frustrating. This amp is a poor performer under the CRO but produces an astounding stereo image. It plays small classic quartets, jazz groups and most voice and piano based music well. You need at least 90dB efficient speakers that can go deep for good listening. See the 6T9 Tube Amplifier Project page for more info.
EL84_PP_6E6P_driver_1.jpg
EL84_PP_6E6P_driver_1.jpgThe Simple EL84 PP version 2 (on steroids) 3396 viewsThis is the second version of my first DIY audio project. I changed the Driver tube to 6E6P strapped as triode with CCS load (IXYS 10m45s - 15mA).
Current sinks LM317 at EL84 cathodes it not grounded but connected to a -24V negative power supply. That gives more gain, less distortion and gives also much more headroom for the output stage.
The coupling caps are 0.22μF PIO JENSEN. I' ll try the russian teflons in the next few days.
This tube amplifier simply rocks.

Nelson-Pass-Bride-of-Zen-BoZ-Preamp-Aluminium-Case.jpgNelson Pass Bride of Zen (BoZ) Preamp - Aluminum Case3374 viewsThe finished Nelson Pass Bride of Zen (BoZ) Preamplifier. Where I though the Nelson Pass B1 buffer had excellent bass, the BoZ came in and made bass reproduction even heavier. Not more extended just weightier. Mid range and treble are extended and detailed. The Hammond aluminum cases sure are smart. You need a very, very quiet PS for this preamp. Any hum just leaches right through.

There is more info and notes in the JFET BoZ (Bride of Zen by Nelson Pass) thread on the forum.

Valve Cymer monoblocks (bottom), passive preamp, Hydra power conditioner and separate DAC and transport. The speakers are local made but have been heavily modified with external Xovers. Truly magnificent sound.
