12AX7-Tube-Phono-Preamplifier.jpg12AX7 Vacuum Tube Phono Preamplifier3653 viewsOk, so after buying a Sansui SR-1050C Turntable, I needed a phono preamp, so I built one.

This one uses no premium parts, but sounds great. It does have a small amount of 60Hz hum, and I plan on installing some tube shields as I know its been induced by the power transformer as the PS is completely clean. The preamp uses a pair of 12AX7 vacuum tubes.

The power supply uses a MOSFET for regulation and the preamp uses a passive RIAA equalization network.

The only changes from the original schematic is the use of a 6X5GT tube rectifier. This is an excellent preamp. The 6SN7 tubes by KENRAD gives deep lows and velvet mids - highs. Coupling caps are Mundorf Silver Oil 0.68μF.

An Alps Blue Velvet potentiometer is topped off with a solid brass black chrome knob. The preamp is very smooth sounding and better than my earlier version which uses an AC supply and regulators on board. See the MM Phono Preamp (battery powered) - inside image for an internal sview.

Oatley_Electronics_K303_JFET_RIAA_Preamp_Kit.jpgOatley K303 JFET RIAA Preamplifier Kit3561 viewsThis is the second of the Oatley Electronics K303 two stage JFET phono preamps. I have built. The first build was in a "tinny" instrument case. The preamp sounded so good that I decided to construct another but this time in a heavy cast aluminum enclosure.

The K303 RIAA preamp kit comes complete with all required parts and a selectable 120/240V power supply. The RIAA section is all passive. The PS incorporates both a voltage doubler and a capacitor multiplier. The two different JFETs have been carefully chosen for their low noise and gain characteristics.

I have chosen a flame red epoxy enamel paint and separated the preamplifier section from the PS. The preamp is dead quiet and so far is the best sounding phono preamp I have built. At AU$30 for the kit, it’s a steal.

Twinings.JPG12AX7 Valve Preamp in Twinings Tea box3534 viewsThis is the fourth 12AX7 tube based preamplifier kit I have built. A Twinings presentation tea box was used as the case (similar to my Gwado CMoy / Grado RA1 Headphone Amp) with a remote PS. Cardas caps were used, all pure silver wire, silver solder, Alps blue velvet attenuator and 4 oz brass knob. The rear has a terminal strip for all the connections and the case is lined with a tar and aluminum film. The power supply has speaker absorbing vinyl lining it to ensure the switch mode tranni remains quiet.

little-amp.jpg
little-amp.jpg50L6GT Tube Amplifier3518 viewsThis little guy is something I came up with when a friend asked me if there was an inexpensive, but decent vacuum tube amplifier he could build. Well, it is low cost and sounds acceptable, but it is dangerous as one side of the AC line is connected to the chassis. Yes, I used a polarized plug, but it also depends on the receptacle being wired correctly... so I recommended that he should build it with an isolation transformer.

It uses two 50L6GT output tubes driven with a 12AX7A. The heaters are series strung with a 68 ohm resistor to take up the remaining 8 volts. The powersupply uses a 1N4005 half-wave rectifier, so it was a bit difficult to filter out the 60 Hz buzz.

For something cheap, it doesn't sound half bad. Though, it doesn't hold a candle to my 6T9 Push-Pull Tube Amplifier!

Picture_024.jpg1930s style singled-ended pentode3508 viewsThis is a new amplifier I designed and built using mostly salvaged parts from British electronics of the 1930s and 40s. The valves are all British 4V types, AC/SP3 driver and N41 pentode output. The power supply uses an MU14 rectifier. The loudspeaker is a 1930s energized type - so it also acts as a smoothing filter.

Don-SE-807-Tube-Amplifier.jpg
Don-SE-807-Tube-Amplifier.jpgSingle-Ended 807 Tube Amplifier3505 viewsI have stated in the past that my mate Don makes an amp a month. This month Don has completed an 807 amp based on a schematic designed by Matt from the USA and the same as I built a short time back. I took a short listen and thought it OK but a much longer review is required. Don’s iron is wound by Dyne which is near us (Melbourne, Australia) and Don’s superb enclosure bases are made by him from, once more, Australian Spotted Gum. Top plate is once more ABS and OPTs are James. This not only a smart looking amp but with some high quality passives under the bonnet and again a very neat wiring layout. In this build JJ filters caps were used. Don has another amp in the pipeline so stayed tuned. About one month from now (lol).

B2BO_ICEPower_1000ASP_modules_.jpgICEPower 1000ASP modules in Par-Metal Enclosure3503 viewsThis is a high power audio amplifier project that I recently completed. The amplifier used two B&O ICEPower 1000ASP modules. Each amplifier module is rated at 1000 Watts. The two amplifier modules are housed in a Par-Metal aluminum case. The amplifier sounds amazing with my Epos ELS303 speakers.
