PradaInsideBack.jpgPrada OPA627 Preamplifier - inside5082 viewsI was inspired to build this preamp by learning of the Burr-Brown OPA627 (very high performance OP amp) and access to my daughter's Prada phone, heavy cardboard, container. The preamplifier modules are constructed on vero proto boards. Only component wire was used here. The input caps are Cornell Dubilier (white) and Solen (black) was used for the output). Metal film resistors, all pure silver hookup wire, gold RCAs jack and WBT silver solder make this a quality build. The box is lined with bitumanised aluminum foil and an Alps Blue Velvet attenuator and 4oz solid brass black knob add to this build. Four 9V lithium batteries (1200Ah each) drive the unit.

DIY-6NS7-KT88-Tube-Monoblocks.jpg
DIY-6NS7-KT88-Tube-Monoblocks.jpgDIY 6NS7-KT88 Monoblock Tube Amps4984 viewsI purchased these extreme valve monoblocks from Dan in Australia, who built them from the ground up, for a song. They are based on the uni-amp cct. brd. You can plug and play KT88(s), 6L6(s) and EL34(s) output valves and switch between pentode and triode mode. The transformers are oversized and were special wound for Dan. Each block weighs over 22kg. The input and driver tubes are Golden Dragon 6SN7(s) with tube rectification. It uses tranni input coupling. Power is 27W.
Pioneer-PAX-A20-_fullrange-speaker.jpg
Pioneer-PAX-A20-_fullrange-speaker.jpgPioneer PAX-A20 fullrange driver - 2.8 cu. ft Bass Reflex Cabinet4984 viewsThe speaker cabinets are built using plans from commonsenseaudio.com I have been busy with the 2.8 cu ft cabinet that I bought from them, now about 95% done. French Polished the outside and need to wait a few more weeks for the shellac to set-up before I can give it a final rub down and buff. The sound is absolutely fantastic, with Pink Floyd being top of the pops when it comes to Big response...

The driver is a sing;e vintage Pioneer PAX-A20 full-range driver and it performs remarkably well still. Well that is to my ears and others seem to agree.

The cabinets are made from 18mm MDF and skinned with 4mm cherry-wood ply, corner quadrants from Red Beech and Horns from White Pine - Kahikatea for ease of machining. The cabinets weigh about 25Kg each and the wadding is just normal household wall insulation, but I did put a layer of speaker-cloth over it and stapled in place to look like a bit of duvet.

dual_channel_2sk1058_2sj162_Mosfet_Power_Amplifier.jpgDual Channel 2sk1058 2sj162 Mosfet Power Amp4952 viewsThis is a dual channel 2sk1058 / 2sj162 mosfet power amplifier, built to be used a main L+R amplifier for my system. I had the amplifier tested after construction to ensure it was within rated specs - each channel is 200W (8 ohm) / 320w (4 ohm) @ 0.003% THD. I have designed a remote turn-on circuit to integrate with my receiver. Each channel has its own power supply with soft start on the line side of toroidal transformers. Cooling is achieved by tunnel heatsink assembly and a PWM fan controller. At start-up fan speed is 30%. Small thermistors are attached to the inside of the heatsinks to monitor temperature. Inputs are electronically balanced.

BattMMPreSmall-1.jpg
BattMMPreSmall-1.jpgMM Phono Preamp (battery powered) - inside4871 viewsThis is my second build of the Jaycar MM phono preamp kit I have completed. This time I wanted it to run from batteries. Three 9V lithium batteries in series provide 27V. A resistive network produces a virtual +/- 13.5V supply for the OPA2134 opamp chips. The cct. brd.(PCB) can very easily be wired so diodes and regulators are not required. No track (trace) cutting is required and only a few simple straps and two resistors are required. An Alps Blue Velvet pot and pure silver wire, silver solder and gold RCAs make this a quality build. Bitumanised Aluminum foil lines the lid and bottom of a sleek compact ABS plastic enclosure to form a smart looking excellent sounding MM phono preamp. See the additional images.

The OPT covers are made from copper clad board and the enclosure is all aluminum and hand made.

DIY-Acrylic-Platter-Turntable.jpg
DIY-Acrylic-Platter-Turntable.jpg4840 viewsFor this DIY turntable I used 1-inch thick acrylic for the platter and plinth, a Pro-Ject tonearm, 2.5-inch machined aluminum legs and built opening glass top and base. The motor is suspended in aluminum case and is vibration free. I also built in a remote on-off so there are no wires showing anywhere.

B2BO_ICEPower_1000ASP_modules_Par-Metal_Case.jpgB&O ICEPower 1000ASP modules4818 viewsThis is a high power audio amplifier project that I recently completed. The amplifier used two B&O ICEPower 1000ASP modules. Each amplifier module is rated at 1000 Watts. The two amplifier modules are housed in a Par-Metal aluminum case. The amplifier sounds amazing with my Epos ELS303 speakers.

Nelson-Pass-Bride-of-Zen-BoZ-Preamplifier.jpg
Nelson-Pass-Bride-of-Zen-BoZ-Preamplifier.jpgNelson Pass Bride of Zen (BoZ) Preamplifier4797 viewsThis is my slant on Mr Pass’s Bride of Zen (BoZ). Big Ruskie 0.1uF 40y-9 PIO military caps handle front-end de-coupling while 10uF polypropylene caps sit at the back. The 40y-9 caps are foil, paper in oil, glass encapsulated then metal encapsulated and sound divine. An Alps blue velvet potentiometer attenuates the input controlled by a 4 oz solid brass knob. Metal film resistors and silver plated wire wrap wire add quality to the custom build. This preamp is built on a strip board. The JFETs are 2SK170 BL. The RCA plugs are gold plated, 5% WBT silver solder is used throughout. Two 10,000uF caps (snubbed) ensure a dead quiet supply and loads of bottom-end. The enclosure is a Hammond anodized Aluminum case.
Nice Mongrel Dog.
