PradaInsideBack.jpgPrada OPA627 Preamplifier - inside4862 viewsI was inspired to build this preamp by learning of the Burr-Brown OPA627 (very high performance OP amp) and access to my daughter's Prada phone, heavy cardboard, container. The preamplifier modules are constructed on vero proto boards. Only component wire was used here. The input caps are Cornell Dubilier (white) and Solen (black) was used for the output). Metal film resistors, all pure silver hookup wire, gold RCAs jack and WBT silver solder make this a quality build. The box is lined with bitumanised aluminum foil and an Alps Blue Velvet attenuator and 4oz solid brass black knob add to this build. Four 9V lithium batteries (1200Ah each) drive the unit.

The plinth is built up by stacking plywood pieces. The tonearm is made from scratch following a complicated magnetically stabilized pick-up design.

It generates some 400W of heat so the heatsinking is massive as are the power supplies. It uses 24 x IRFP244 MOS-FETs which are closely matched into groups of 6. This is the most exhaustive part of the build. Other than that the design is incredibly simple. PCBs are available from www.kk-pcb.com, although my article at diyAudio.com details the process and patterns that I used for my own build.

In the guise that you see in the photo, this amplifier runs at an internal temperature of 45 degrees C on a warm British Summer day, which is well below the 70-80 degrees that Nelson himself allows for his commercial products. The sound quality is simply STUNNING. I’m running an Arcam CD36 / Pumpkin-Shuntky Pre-amp / Passive Attenuator / B&W DM633 with Chord Chorus Silver Interconnects. The bass slam is accurate and endless, the sound stage perfect and the midrange just sweet as a nut. This replaced my A700, itself a clone of a Mark Levinson design, and absolutely knocks the ML into the ground.

Low current draw (~3mA @ +/- 16V). The sound is very clean and flat. This preamp will definitely please the purist solid state amp lovers.

The transformers are oversized and were special wound for Dan. Each block weighs over 22kg. The input and driver tubes are Golden Dragon 6SN7(s) with tube rectification. It uses tranni input coupling. Power is 27W.

Three 9V lithium batteries in series provide 27V. A resistive network produces a virtual +/- 13.5V supply for the OPA2134 opamp chips. The cct. brd.(PCB) can very easily be wired so diodes and regulators are not required. No track (trace) cutting is required and only a few simple straps and two resistors are required. An Alps Blue Velvet pot and pure silver wire, silver solder and gold RCAs make this a quality build. Bitumanised Aluminum foil lines the lid and bottom of a sleek compact ABS plastic enclosure to form a smart looking excellent sounding MM phono preamp. See the additional images.

French Polished the outside and need to wait a few more weeks for the shellac to set-up before I can give it a final rub down and buff. The sound is absolutely fantastic, with Pink Floyd being top of the pops when it comes to Big response...

The driver is a sing;e vintage Pioneer PAX-A20 full-range driver and it performs remarkably well still. Well that is to my ears and others seem to agree.

The cabinets are made from 18mm MDF and skinned with 4mm cherry-wood ply, corner quadrants from Red Beech and Horns from White Pine - Kahikatea for ease of machining. The cabinets weigh about 25Kg each and the wadding is just normal household wall insulation, but I did put a layer of speaker-cloth over it and stapled in place to look like a bit of duvet.

I had the amplifier tested after construction to ensure it was within rated specs - each channel is 200W (8 ohm) / 320w (4 ohm) @ 0.003% THD. I have designed a remote turn-on circuit to integrate with my receiver. Each channel has its own power supply with soft start on the line side of toroidal transformers. Cooling is achieved by tunnel heatsink assembly and a PWM fan controller. At start-up fan speed is 30%. Small thermistors are attached to the inside of the heatsinks to monitor temperature. Inputs are electronically balanced.
