DIY-Acrylic-Platter-Turntable.jpg
DIY-Acrylic-Platter-Turntable.jpg4346 viewsFor this DIY turntable I used 1-inch thick acrylic for the platter and plinth, a Pro-Ject tonearm, 2.5-inch machined aluminum legs and built opening glass top and base. The motor is suspended in aluminum case and is vibration free. I also built in a remote on-off so there are no wires showing anywhere.

_63-Fender-Reverb-Clone.jpg
_63-Fender-Reverb-Clone.jpg'63 Fender Reverb Clone2010 viewsHere is a photo of the last project I built. It is a rear view with the cover removed. It is a modernized clone of a '63 Fender Reverb. I changed a few things like using modern grounding and layout methods I went with larger filter caps a full wave bridge rectifier. I think I used a slightly nicer spring suspension system to "fly" the pan in it's shock isolation mounting. The input jack is grounded to the chassis but the other jacks are isolated. There are two transformers and one choke, all are made in USA with paper insulation. The enclosure is Maple. The sound is very true to the vintage Fender. It goes from very subtle to full-on spring/twang.

Dons-300B-Tube-Amplifier.jpg
Dons-300B-Tube-Amplifier.jpgDon's Compact 300B Amplifier2028 viewsDon has build this exquisitely compact 300B on one of his fine Spotted Gum bases. He uses ABS for the top plate with no bottom plate. He doesn’t believe in them. The 300Bs and 6SN7 are Chinese made “Electron Tube” – Shuguang . All components underneath are high-end. Though Don is on a pension he always uses the best passive parts but skimps on the tubes. The rec. tube is a Golden Dragon 5U4. The horizontal power tranni, OPTs and choke are locally wound by Dyne and are expensive. The best amp I have heard of Dons is his 2A3 which I intend to re-borrow. This amp is new and may improve with time but for now both the top end and bottom end are a little crippled. Mids don’t sound fast and slightly masked. BUT this may all change with time. It does play very loud though on a large 3 way Osborn Eclipse @91db efficient.

Pioneer-PAX-A20-_fullrange-speaker.jpg
Pioneer-PAX-A20-_fullrange-speaker.jpgPioneer PAX-A20 fullrange driver - 2.8 cu. ft Bass Reflex Cabinet4488 viewsThe speaker cabinets are built using plans from commonsenseaudio.com I have been busy with the 2.8 cu ft cabinet that I bought from them, now about 95% done. French Polished the outside and need to wait a few more weeks for the shellac to set-up before I can give it a final rub down and buff. The sound is absolutely fantastic, with Pink Floyd being top of the pops when it comes to Big response...

The driver is a sing;e vintage Pioneer PAX-A20 full-range driver and it performs remarkably well still. Well that is to my ears and others seem to agree.

The cabinets are made from 18mm MDF and skinned with 4mm cherry-wood ply, corner quadrants from Red Beech and Horns from White Pine - Kahikatea for ease of machining. The cabinets weigh about 25Kg each and the wadding is just normal household wall insulation, but I did put a layer of speaker-cloth over it and stapled in place to look like a bit of duvet.

Scott-299-Amplifier.jpgScott 299 Amplifier Rebuild1710 viewsThis is a picture of my 299 Scott Amplifier. I made the whole enclosure case using 1/2" (13 mm) aluminum. The knobs are made of one and 1-3/8" roll aluminum. The face plate is made from a piece of stainless steel with silk screened lettering. The Scott 299 amplifier was completely re- built from the ground up and it sounds great.

SE-807-Tube-Amp.jpg
SE-807-Tube-Amp.jpgSingle-Ended (SE) 807 Tube Amplifier2153 viewsAfter picking up a couple of cheap ($7) ATS25/807 tubes a volunteer from the forum, Matt, designed me an amp to go with them. This project stagnated for over a year and a half and now is finally finished. The colours are strong between the Edcor 25W OPTs and power tranni and the “Red Delicious” top plates. The bases are Australian Spotted Gum. Remote PS carries a 5H 300mA Hammond choke and 5Y3 power tube (upgraded to Golden Dragon 5U4). The amp section has all ceramic sockets and plate cap, the driver tube a Sovtek 6SN7 (has been upgraded to Shuguang 50 Year Treasure). Bipolar bypass caps are used on the 6SN7 and low ESR caps on the 807s. The amp looks smart and sounds excellent. It plays loud for its 2.7 measured Watts and has huge dynamic head room.

parallel-6C33C-tube-power-amplifier.jpg
parallel-6C33C-tube-power-amplifier.jpgDon's parallel 6C33C tube power amplifier2246 viewsDon the amp builder (who’s 300B amp is posted in the gallery) has put together this parallel 6C33C power amp. Though not complete it’s not hard to see this is going to be a great looking amp. With the twin power tubes the primary impedance of the OPTs can be lowered to produce greater output power. The toroidal transformer is for the heaters which draw a huge amount of current. The top plate is ABS and Don made the base and is now making bases for me. All other trannies are Dyne who a local winders (Victoria Australia). Can’t wait to hear this one. Don also has a 2A3 almost finished.

6EM7-SET-Amp-Dual-Monoblocks.jpg
6EM7-SET-Amp-Dual-Monoblocks.jpgParis Duo - 6EM7 SET Monoblock Amps1685 viewsAfter completing a dual mono 6EM7 integrated amp, at the request of an established customer, I built these 6EM7 monoblocks. No built in preamp or attenuated this time. The chassis are 2M thick cast Al, acid etch primed and top coated with epoxy enamel high gloss paint. Only the power tranni, 5Y3 and 6EM7 stand on the top plate. The 10W Edcor OPT and Hammond 5H choke are in the chassis. Gold speaker binding posts and single RCA are on the back. Also inside is a EMI power filter and a short power cord with male IEC power socket and an RF choke connect this Paris Duo to the mains. The PS has a two stage filter: CLCRC/RC which makes this 1.8W absolutely dead quiet. Wire-wrap wire (heavily twisted) connects the RCA to the 6EM7 and OPT to speaker biding post. Silver solder is used in the amp section. Great mid-range.

Hiraga-MC-Phono-Preamplifier.jpg
Hiraga-MC-Phono-Preamplifier.jpgHiraga MC Phono Preamplifier3122 viewsFinding I liked Moving Coil cartridges I tried my hand at yet another MC preamp. This one is a Jean Hiraga design and uses matched low noise bipolar transistors pairs and a +/- 6V source. The transistors Hiraga specifies are no longer available. But better replacements are the Analog Devices SSM2220 chips at $11 each (you need two). Hiraga specifies very large storage caps so I juiced this compact build with 1F (1,000,000uF). Plus I added 220uF low ESR caps and 0.22uF snubbers for better mid-range performance. Since this image I mounted an external switch to select between 220, 100 and 45 ohms of loading. A 25 turn trim pot allows adjustment of "0" volts on the input and Russian PIO caps decouple the output.

two-stage-RIAA-phono-tube-preamp.jpg
two-stage-RIAA-phono-tube-preamp.jpgTwo stage tube phono preamp with RIAA equalization1771 viewsAfter building a number of diy jFet based phono preamps, on request from a friend, I built this two stage tube phono RIAA preamp. The circuit design is from the TubeCAD Journal and is one of the simpler designs on the site. The circuit construction is contained on veroboard (perfboard) and housed in extruded aluminum enclosures from Hammond. The external PS run from a 24VAC wall wart. A step-up tranni converts this to 260V and a two stage C-R filtering ensures clean power. The heater voltage is DC. Tubes are Golden Dragon 12AX7s. Russian PIO caps are used in the inter-stage coupling/output and Sprague orange drops for the RIAA stage. With my Grado Reference MM wood body cartridge this preamp sounds divine.

LePacific-MC-PrePre.jpgLe Pacific MC pre preamp2868 viewsHere is one of three Le Pacific MC pre preamp builds. All the construction is on veroboard (strip board). These builds have been tested with a two different cartridges with an output of 0.35mV and all work extremely well. The J-FETs are 2SK170 BL which are matched. The output capacitors are Russian mililtary PIO. The case colour is Sungold the same used on Paris. All phono preamp builds are battery powered.

6EM7_Single_Ended_Triode_Amplifier.jpg
6EM7_Single_Ended_Triode_Amplifier.jpg“Paris” – 6EM7 Dual Mono Integrated Amplifier2091 viewsWhat started as a forum thread discussion (6EM7 power amp) ended in the construction of a 6EM7 (Sylvania tube) integrated triode amplifier. I used dual mono construction with two power transformers, two 5Y3 rectifier tubes and two separate power filter stages but with a shared single stage preamp. There is a single EMI/RFI power filter feeding both power supplies. Two chokes and two 15W Edcor audio output transformers are in the base of the enclosure. An Alps blue velvet pot after the preamp stage (4S Universal) controls volume to the power amp section. The colour is Sungold and the base Mirbue. The amp has a very detailed mid-range and produces about 2W.
