12AX7-Tube-Phono-Preamplifier.jpg12AX7 Vacuum Tube Phono Preamplifier3651 viewsOk, so after buying a Sansui SR-1050C Turntable, I needed a phono preamp, so I built one.

This one uses no premium parts, but sounds great. It does have a small amount of 60Hz hum, and I plan on installing some tube shields as I know its been induced by the power transformer as the PS is completely clean. The preamp uses a pair of 12AX7 vacuum tubes.

The power supply uses a MOSFET for regulation and the preamp uses a passive RIAA equalization network.

Sansui-SR-1050C-Fully-Manual-Turntable.jpgSansui SR-1050C Turntable4178 viewsA Sansui SR-1050C, fully manual phono turntable.

I did the following mods to it:

1- Installed a new Shure m350ed cartridge
2- Replaced the belt
3- Added a belt strength regulator screw (the original design didnt have it)
4- Replaced the RCAs with gols plated ones
5- Replaced the Saprk Killer cap with X2 cap.
6- Installed ferrite chokes on audio and power cable.
7- Installed an EMI-RFI filter

It sounds and works great now.

TeaBoxTopII.JPGTwinings Tea Box 12AX7 Valve Preamp II2512 viewsThis the second Tea Box preamp I have built. The previous 12AX7 Tea Box preamp has an external PS. This one has the PS inside the attractive timber box. Jupiter hand made beeswax caps are featured in this build. The box is lined with bituminized Aluminum foil, all silver wire and gold RCAs used throughout. WBT silver solder and an Alps blue velvet attenuator add to a quality build. The standard 12AX7s were upgraded to gold pin Golden Dragons and valve rings added. The front knob is a 4oz solid brass job the brass cones are heavy weight. The Twinings decal adds to the whole aesthetics. See the project page for more information about the 12AX7 Tube Preamp Kit.Feb 17, 2009

Silver-Copper-RCA-Audio-Cables.jpg
Silver-Copper-RCA-Audio-Cables.jpgSilver / heat shrink braided RCA cables with Copper drain9168 viewsA few years back I made some pure silver braided RCA cables where the third wire is not terminated at the destination end . The silver is polished then covered in heat shrink. There are two earth or negative wires. Theory is the third wire drains noise back to the source. In this build all those principals are used except the second earth wire is .8mm enameled copper wire. Smaller ferrite chokes were also used. I made these yellow to distinguish them from others. These are only 400mm long for phono preamp to preamp interconnect. Gold plugs and silver solder were used. Sound good.

Sansui_1.JPGSansui AU-X11 (rare)8365 viewsThe Melbourne Audio Club Australia has many talented members. Some sell commercially, all over the world, there own brands others DIY for themselves while still others take it on themselves to restore "better" commercial units. This member has restored this (I'm told) rare Sansui AU-X11. It certainly looks impressive.Jan 29, 2009

Atwood3.JPG12AX7 Valve Preamp with Jupiter Beeswax Caps2468 viewsI have made a number of these kit two stage 12AX7 valve preamps in all sorts of enclosures. I have employed a wide variety of different caps in the signal path including, Sprague orange drops, Cardas Golden Ratio and standard metalized polypropylene. In this build I have used the Jupiter beeswax and paper caps. I have used these caps before in SS preamps and found the sound very natural and liquid. The larger components have been placed on the underside of the cct. brds.to allow the valve to project through the enclosure.Jan 26, 2009

2_with_bigger_brother.jpgDIY Phono Preamp, Valve Preamp and Chipamp Monoblocks5815 viewsThis image shows the degree to which Paul has gone with an all DIY audio set-up. You can see all three main components. Also Paul made some Silver Highway, pure silver and heat-shrink interconnect cables. The Valve preamp (larger silver front enclosure) and Chip amp monoblocks are earlier builds of mine. He is also using OB speakers I built which have had serious Xover upgrades and also a sub-woofer of mine to compliment the OBs. This combo produces a phenomenal sounds stage image with exceptional detail and clarity. Jan 17, 2009

1_phono_pre.jpgKit form Phono Preamp6426 viewsPaul's rendition of the MM Phono Preamplifier Kit is both neat and very serious looking. The small instrument case matches a 12AX7 Valve Amplifier of mine that Paul is now using. Paul, like me is very pleased with the sonic qualities of this inexpensive phono preamp kit. He did note it took a day or two to sell to a smoother sound.Jan 17, 2009
