The PVC pipe enclosure houses a 3-inch HiVi B3N fullrange driver and a HiVi T20-8 textile dome tweeter. The enclosure is tuned through a rear firing bass port. There is a 2-way crossover inside the enclosure and the binding posts are on the back. The speaker sits on a wood platform with spikes. The frequency range is about 65 to 20,000Hz . There is a nice sound stage and pretty good low end response considering the small size of the driver and enclosure. The preamplifier modules are constructed on vero proto boards. Only component wire was used here. The input caps are Cornell Dubilier (white) and Solen (black) was used for the output). Metal film resistors, all pure silver hookup wire, gold RCAs jack and WBT silver solder make this a quality build. The box is lined with bitumanised aluminum foil and an Alps Blue Velvet attenuator and 4oz solid brass black knob add to this build. Four 9V lithium batteries (1200Ah each) drive the unit.May 22, 2009

Prada_1.jpgPrada OPA627 Preamplifier3456 viewsUsing my daughter's Prada phone box (heavy cardboard) I fashioned this preamplifier around the Bur Brown (high performance) OPA627AP opamp ($AU50). It is a single stage preamp and powered by four lithium 9V batteries for a PS of 18V.

The black knob is solid brass and the attenuator is an Alps Blue Velvet. Gold RCA jacks, silver wire and WBT silver solder are used throughout.

The amplifier is based on this KT88 SE UL Tube Amp. I constructed my own and used a couple of 5881 tubes which I got for free. I did use the 6N1P though. I over specked the power tranni which originally produce over 600V with no load and diode rectification. I eventually used the secondary centre tap, limiting resistors and a standby switch and brought B+ to 405V. The base is made of Asian Merbeau and the top plate epoxy enamel paint. Edcor XSE15-8-5K OPTs, and ceramic sockets add to the overall quality finish. The sound is clean and airy and the amp is dead quiet between tracks. It will play quite loud with efficient speakers and has no audible distortion. The sound stage fills the room and stereo image is very accurate. Apr 18, 2009

Pre5Y3.JPG5Y3 rectifier tube and Twinings Tea Box valve preamp2504 viewsI posted an image of the finished Twinings Tea Box preamp with valve rectification then suddenly remembered why I had gone down the the valve rec. path. It is because I have a well used 5Y3G in my garrison of tubes which I wanted to employ in a project. In the original version I used a 5AR4, squat cathoded, Chinese and smart. But now the full realization of the project has come to light. This is how it was always meant to be (see earlier images for the original finish).

Some audiophiles roll their rectifier tubes to fine tune their amps. With this tube in place (and based on a short listen) I feel there is greater bass weight and slightly extended depth of sound stage. But who cares, it just looks slick, the way it was always intended.

This one was much harder as It had a pair of SMD opamps and replacing them with a pair of 8 pin DIP sockets wasn't easy, but I managed to do it just fine.

So, here are the mods:

1. Installed 0.15uF X2 power filter cap
2. Intsalled a pair of ferrite chokes (on on power cord and another on the line out flat cable)
3. Replaced original opamps with NE5532 and later with Burr-Brown OPA2134 (2134s do sound better).
4. Replaced electrolytic coupling caps with a pair of Jantzens 4.7uF/630V.
5. Replaced RCAs connectors with gold plated ones.

The increase in performance was great too, but nos as good as my ONKYO DX-C380 CDP. I plan on replacing all supply and decoupling caps with Rubycon ZLs to improve it further.

Its a 6 CD player and its well constructed. It also uses the very common Sony KSS-213 pickup (the same one the Marantz 5001 and 5003 uses).
Since I had just got some Elna Cerafine caps, I decided to try them in. Here's what I did:

1- Replaced all coupling caps with 100uF/50V Elna Cerafines
2- Replaced all PS and decoupling caps with Ultra-Low ESR Rubycon ZLs.
3- Added a line supply Cap (1uF X2 Rated)
4- Added a power input choke.
5- Bypassed supply caps with smaller (1/10th capacitance) caps
6- Replaced JRC2968 OPAMP with Burr-Brown OPA2134

The end result was amazing. This is now a truly Hi-End player. It just amazing how good those Elna Cerafines sound int this kind of application. I was willing to try some Black Gates in place, but these Cerafines sound so good in there that I just gave up.

Another Tea Box valve preamp but this time with a valve rec. remote PS. The rectifier valve is a 5AR4. The iron consists of a Hammond power transformer and 10H choke. Golden Dragon tubes are used in the 12AX7 Tube Preamp . The preamp uses silver hook-up wire, Alps Blue Velvet attenuator, brass cones and 4oz brass knob. Jupiter hand made beeswax caps are used in the amp modules and silver solder throughout. The sound stage has gained greater dimension and detail has improved over my SS preamp.
