Bass frequencies are deep and clean while the highs are well balanced. But, due to either the limitation of the TN28 to 20 kHz or the crossover network, high frequencies are not as well defined and crisp as on the Hi-Vi 3-Way Tower Loudspeakers I built few months ago.

They are Zigmahornet Speakers with Merrill 4.4 fullrange speakers instead of the Fostex FE103E. I chose black paint because it fit with the TV and TV stand/stereo cabinet that I have plus it hides my questionable workmanship. All in all, I really enjoyed making them and with the Merrill drivers they sound great with a surprising amount of bass from such a small driver.

SV101780.JPGOpen Baffle Speakers - Rear6564 viewsThis shot shows the OBs before two layers of darcon were stapled to the rear leaving only the woofer rears exposed. The particle board is 18mm the woofers 10", mids 2" domes and titanium tweeters. The Xover is a 2nd order. I replaced the HF caps with metal film polypropylene varieties from electrolytics. Heavy metal brackets join the base board and baffle broad. The boxes recline slightly so the speakers will stand up without other assistance.

Listing is pleasant with voice bright and bass OK but not deep. The woofers are new and very stiff so bass response may follow many hours of playing. See other image.

SV101783.JPGOpen Baffle Speakers - Front5813 viewsI had a very large sheet of 18mm particle board which had been sitting around for years. Also a pair of titanium domed tweeters and 2" domed mid-range surplus. What to do with them? With the addition of a pair of cheap but very robust 10" woofers and a 2nd order Xover (600Hz & 3.5kHz) I thought a may knock-up a pair of OBs.

I allowed one day to build these from scratch and with the assistance of some massive angle brackets and a few meters of darcon here is the result. That total height and depth of the speakers is covered in two thick layers of darcon leaving only the woofer rears bare.

The woofers are stiff and require many hours of play to get them to full performance. But the speakers have an excellent sound stage bright mids and highs. Bass is OK but not deep.

The box volume is 5.2L and a camphor burl veneer was used for the finish. I use these with no baffle step correction whatsoever and are mated with an 8" subwoofer from av123.
