S-5-Electronics-K-16LS-kit-enclosure.jpg4230 viewsI'm running this stock apart from the Alps Blue volume pot which I upgraded after the original sprang a leak. I'm using quite a few components bought from: http://www.mafaudio.com/pro/propage.aspx.
There are seven LED's that light up the feet and fronts of the brushed aluminum transformer cases. The LED's are powered from a 12v mains transformer bought from Maplin in the UK. The VU meters also run from the extra transformer. The chassis is made from wood bought from the local yard. To cut the VU meter holes I used a 32mm Spade bit then used a file to open the hole up to just under 34mm. The main volume control area was drilled using a 50mm Forstner bit and the tone controls a 30mm Forstner bit. It's coated in about 5-6 coats of clear varnish and involved an awful amount of sanding.

Transformer covers, knobs, feet, phono plugs and other parts sourced from http://www.mafaudio.com/.
The main transformer case was scratched and they will send another free with my next order. I've found them very easy to deal with. The case is made of pine bought at the local merchants with a plywood top. I used only simple tools.

K_16LS_Tube_Amp_Kit_with_PL_Preamp_Kit.jpgK-16LS Tube Amp Kit with PL Tube Preamp8286 viewsAfter months of looking I finally decided on the S-5 Electronics K-16LS stereo tube amplifier kit together with its sister PL tube preamplifier kit. The Stereo Integrated Tube Amplifier produces up to 16W and utilizes 5670 triode and 6005 pentode tubes. The PL tube preamp kit uses a 5670 triode tube.
I ditched the supplied wood board for a larger board to accommodate the preamp. Using my IPod and a set of Celestion floorstanders (90dB) I sat back to listen. WOW - seriously loud. Bass is fantastic, treble is sharp. Mid range seems to be missing a bit but after trying different tracks I am putting this down to poor quality source MP3 via the IPod. There is a reasonable amount of hum when you take the volume up but nothing annoying.
Next step is to attempt the mods for the K-12 kits.
