BBAmpRears.jpgBBAmp (BeBamp) bread board tube amp with no driver stage2005 viewsThis is this the rear of the bread board power amp showing the OPT case with speaker binding posts and RCAs. The On/Off switch and fuse cane be seen from here. Because the OPTs were of open construction I placed them in a metal case which doubled as a terminal block for speakers and input RCAs. The tubes are JJ Blue Glass KT88.

I call this one the Special Edition version. It uses an external solid state power supply instead of the two SMPS that come with the phono preamp kit.

See my review of the 6418 Tube (Valve) RIAA Phono Preamplifier Kit for full details.

PhonoTubePreampMkIIInsideS.jpgOatley Electronics K282 JAN 6418 valve phono preamp2166 viewsMy second build of the Oatley Electronics JAN 6418 valve phono preamp kit. This time no switch mode power supply and metal film resistors and better polypropylene capacitors replace the basic kit components.

For details about the upgrades I made to the basic kit, see my review of the 6418 Tube (Valve) RIAA Phono Preamplifier Kit.

OatleyPhonoPreFinisS.jpgMongrel Dog Audio JAN6418 tube phono preamp2179 viewsThis is a new tube phono preamp kit from Oatley Electronics based around the JAN 6418 sub-miniature pentode tubes. The phono preamp kit has been housed in a cast aluminum enclosure with a Hammered Copper finish. Inside the enclosure bitumanised aluminum foil lines the lid and top. Gold RCAs grace the back. The sound reproduction is full bodied with deep bass, bright mids and highs. This phono preamp may out perform my OPAMP unit.

There are more details about my experience with this inexpensive little phono preamp amp kit on the 6418 Tube RIAA Stereo Phono Preamplifier Kit project page.

OatleyPhonoPreInsideS.jpgMongrel Dog Audio JAN6 418 valve phono preamp2798 viewsThis is the new tube phono preamp kit for MM cartridges from Oatley Electronics. The small tube preamp kit comes with all components required, including NOS JAN 6418 sub-miniature tubes and a wall wart for the switch mode power supply. The wall wart PS has multi-outlet adapters to fit most mains power outlets worldwide. The PS auto-switches to the correct mains voltage to provide 5V DC to the kit. There are two tube stages with each stage supporting a FET buffer to the next. The PCB is plated through and screen printed.

See the 6418 Tube RIAA Stereo Phono Preamplifier Kit project page for more details and a review of this kit.

Dons6C33C.jpg
Dons6C33C.jpgDon's 6C33C tube amp from Down Under with locally wound OPTs3322 viewsThis beautiful 6c33c amp is not one of mine but belongs to a regular customer of the electronics store I work at. The power tubes are the same used in Mig fighter jets as regulator tubes. Don has dropped one on a wooden floor, it bounced and he caught it. Tough tubes. The timber base is made by Don and the top plate is 4mm thick ABS plastic. The power transformers and chokes are well separated from the music making bits. He employed locally made horizontal power transformer, chokes and audio OPTs. The amp is musical and neutral sounding low bass is a little spongy and undefined when added to my all valve system. It produces 15W, not bad from a SET. The front tube is a Sovtek 6SJ7 and the amp is two stage and weighs 40lb! Mark – contributor.

See this 6c33c tube amplifier thread for more info about this tube.

MongrelChamp.jpg
MongrelChamp.jpgFender Champ 5F1 valve guitar amp.2792 viewsMy build of the Fender Champ 5F1. It is a SE three stage tube amp based on the 6V6 power valve and 12AX7 triode. The amps were first made in the late 40's up to early 80's. And re-issued in 2006. The original schematic had valve rectification. I added a 10H open choke. There are only two inter-stage caps and one by-pass cap on the 6V6 cathode resistor (not counting PS caps). I went for a Classic Champ sound by using cotton covered, single core, tinned copper wire as the hook-up wire, bees wax (Jupiter originals) inter-stage caps, an original Ozzie made 12AX7, Ozzie 5Y3 and 6V6 Black Glass (original). PS caps were increased from 8uf to 47uf and an effects loop added (between stage one and stage two). I didn't install the NFB loop from the OPT secondary to stage two. Instead I made the output stage UL (Edcor tranny). The amp is stable even when over-driven heavily. When hooked-up to a Pioneer PA 12" driver (4" Al/vented dust cover) it sounds excellent. Very clean highs and gutsy lows.
