I added a simple headphone output delay during tube warmup, essentially a clone of the e12 delay from Millet Max: http://www.diyforums.org/MAX/MAXe12.php

The regulator side-kick is simply 3 50V, 1000uf capacitors before an LM317M regulator, also cobbled from the Millet Max (but without the need for the bridge diodes): http://www.diyforums.org/MAX/MAXps.php. Works swell and no noise. Audio is incredible.

I am now running it with SED Wing ā€œCā€ tubes which look and sound very close to the United Electronics tubes it started with. An audibly impressive amp which belies its functional simplicity.

PinotAssembleIISS.jpg6AS7 SET amplifier with JAN 5R4 rectifier tube2251 viewsThis compact amp is based on an 6AS7 (dual triode), JAN 5R4 (both coke bottle) and 12AX7 driver tube. The top plated is sprayed to match the Edcor OPTs (1.7k/8ohm). The base is solid Mirbeu. Power transformer is Hammond and so is the choke. Component-2-component wiring with no PCB. Silver wire connects gold RCAs to the driver tube. Jensen (0.22uf 630V) copper paper and oil caps join the driver and power stages. The 6AS7 are pushed to 13W dissipation. Bass is heavy and extended, mids and treble highly detailed and sound stage very deep and defined. An extremely good looking and great sounding amp.

The power amplifier uses tubes 8417. The tubes can be replaced with different ones: 6L6, 6L6GC, KT88, 6V6 and alike. In this case, the current of the output tubes can be tuned. BeBampDStage6SN7ss.jpgBe Bamp 6SN7 remote driver-under the bonnet2169 viewsUnder the bonnet of the new 6SN7 Be Bamp remote driver stage can be seen the Russian 0.47uf paper, foil and oil caps (green) and component layout. The bi-pass caps are low ESR types and the filter cap was snubbed. Only additional wire used was the filament wire and two earth connections. The assembly method was component-2-component wiring. No hook-up wire was used in the signal path at all and the signal path is very short. Tube socket is ceramic with gold plated pin connects.

This driver stage out-performs the original 6N1P stage, to my ears anyhow. Better bass, deeper, better textured sound stage, extended reverb and a warmer sound in the mid-range.

The finish is Hammered Copper. Again the Russian military caps of foil, paper and oil will be used as the inter-stage caps.

Wire will be cotton coated tinned copper and all silver solder. Socket is ceramic and the tube will be running on 350V HT+.

Just dropping in the tubes in where the JJ Blues Glass KT88s once were gave me a 2W improvement in my SE UL bread board amp raising the power to 9.7W. Bass is far more controlled and mid-range crisper and clearer. Idle current is 112mA up from 93mA and HT+ is 400V with bias at 34V. Operation is class A. These tubes are not only impressive looking but have improved the performance of the amp. +/- 3db points are 26hz to 36khz.

This is the original cct. used in the Merlot amps with some components upgraded. The is no volume control or input cap and pure silver wire used in the signal path. Russian Military caps (paper and foil) were used for the inter-stage caps. Low ESR caps used where possible. The timber box is bitumanized Al foil lined. Tube is a Russian 6N1P.

The Be Bamp can now deliver full volume to the point of clipping. Well short of clipping a high volume level can be obtained with large 91db sensitive 3-way tower speakers. With the driver stage being remote other driver stages can be matched to the power stage and share the power supply. This provides another level of experimentation and flexibility with the over-all system.

BBAmpS.jpgBBAmp (BeBamp) bread board tube amp with no driver stage.2516 viewsI wanted to see if I could drive a SE UL tube power stage from a two stage tube preamp. This bread board amp (BBAmp - BeBamp) was constructed to test the theory. Most bread board amps have the wiring exposed. I wanted this to look and sound excellent so all wiring is underneath the bread board. There are lots of exposed components e.g. rectifier components, but all wiring is hidden. The bread board is Australian pine, sanded and treated with Australian beeswax. Edcor OPTs are enclosed in the aluminum case (back right) which provides a back plate for speaker posts and input RCAs. The amp is absolutely dead quiet and extremely transparent. The amp will produce the sonic signature of your preamp. A high gain preamp and very sensitive speakers are required. This can be shipped as a modular bread board kit amp. The tubes are JJ Blue Glass KT88.
