"Diaphony's" An open baffle design
|
"Diaphonys". A Dipole with a 10" separation between cabinets (21â€w *18â€h*6â€upper cab) to direct reflected waves to the listener. Low distortion driver choices with a SB Acoustics 29RDC-0004 for highs, Usher Audio 8945A for mids, and an Eminence Alpha15A for lows (lower cab same as the upper but extened to 12†depth). These drivers work together nicely together with a 2nd order LR with the low end of the Usher rolling off naturally. Upper cab with a 8" cardboard tube to direct waves from the Usher from the back of the 6" wide speaker box depth to the reflected surface with minimal re-reflection to the back of the driver. I used a 6" diameter plywood rounded baffle ends to reduce diffraction losses and to improve off axis response. Claity SA Caps where important, Solen Fast Caps else where. Goertz inductors with Madisound Sledgehammer for the Alpha 15A. Balic Birch construction with Walnut veneer. The sound? I knew immediately when the SB and Usher were on just a 22" wide by 60" tall board I had made good choices. The cleanest mid I have ever heard. I'm sure there are better ones, but not by much. Voices that were unintelligible on other systems of recordings I know well became understandable - embarrassingly so. A wood block sounds like a real live wood block. I primarily used various tracks off Tania Libertad’s album “Costa Negra and Pacifika’s “Asuncion†for listening tests and crossover tweaking – two extremely well tracked and mastered albums to say nothing of the voices and talent. While listening to track 12 of Libertad’s album “Yo Venco A Ofrecer Mi Corazonâ€, in my listening area, it becomes to difficult point to speaker placement without visual cues. The Diaphony’s are large, they do need to be about 4 feet away from a back and side wall seem to be the only distracters. Many compliments at the recent Northern California DIY Audio meet outside of Sacrameno, CA.
