Audio Nirvana Classic 8 Fullrange Speaker Driver

Audio Nirvana Classic 8 Fullrange Speaker Driver

The Audio Nirvana Classic 8 fullrange speakers are a relatively recent addition to the expanded product line of Audio Nirvana fullrange speaker drivers. As noted in the product name, the Classic 8 is a 8" (200 mm) diameter fullrange speaker transducer, with a nominal 8-ohm impedance. The Audio Nirvana Classic 8 speaker drivers are available with ferrite, alinco and neodymium magnets. This speaker review examines the Audio Nirvana Classic 8 with ferrite magnet. The Classic 8 speaker drivers utilize a paper cone and the dust cap is made from a coated fabric material. The speaker surrounds are an accordion style and made with treated cloth with a tacky coating. This style of speaker suspension can provide a very long service life. The speaker voice coil diameter is 35 mm (1.4") and the datasheet notes the Rated Input at 30W and the Music Power at 50W. The The weight of the enormous ferrite magnet is noted as 1400 g (1.40 kg or 3.09 lbs) and the total weight of the Classic 8" speaker driver is 3690 g (3.69 kg or 8.14 lbs). From the datasheet the Audio Nirvana Classic 8 speaker drivers are noted to be capable of an extended frequency response from about 46 Hz to 20 kHz. The driver excursion is noted as Xmax = 1.0 mm. The Audio Nirvana Classic 8 speaker drivers are constructed around a thick solid black cast aluminum frame and the overall build quality of the speaker drivers appears to be excellent.

Across the front black frame of the Classic 8 driver, Audio Nirvana is written in gold embossed block lettering. Audio Nirvana stickers proudly adorn the sides of the large ferrite magnet and also across the bottom plate of the speaker driver (Photograph 1). The Classic 8 speaker driver connectors are gold plated 5-way binding posts.

The Audio Nirvana Classic 8 cast frame fullrange speaker drivers were neatly packaged in moulded Styrofoam which fit snuggly inside a cardboard box marked that the speakers were manufactured in China. The speaker driver packaging also included a tight fitting rigid plastic cover that slips over the cast frame and can be later used to protect the driver cone from fingers when they are not in use. A driver datasheet was included as part of the speaker driver packaging. The Classic 8 speakers were double boxed, very well packaged and shipped to Canada from Missouri, USA.

Thiele/Small (T/S) Parameters - Audio Nirvana Classic 8 Fullrange Speaker Driver

The Thiele/Small Parameters of the Classic 8 speaker drivers have been measured using the Dayton Audio Test Systems (DATS). The T/S parameters derived from the small signal speaker testing as well as the parameters noted on the Audio Nirvana Classic 8 driver datasheet are summarized below in Table 1. The measured Thiele/Small parameters of the tested driver pair were generally close to the specifications noted on the Classic 8 driver datasheet. The Fs measured a little high and this is likely due to insufficient break-in time prior to measurement. The pair of Classic 8 drivers measured reasonably close to one another.

Near Field Frequency Response - Audio Nirvana Classic 8 Fullrange Speaker Driver

The near field frequency response of the Classic 8 driver is shown below in Figure 2. The speaker frequency measurements were made using a Dayton Audio OmniMic V2 measurement system. The measured frequency response of the 200 mm Classic 8 fullrange driver was fairly smooth across a wide portion of the audio range.

Sound - Audio Nirvana Classic 8 Fullrange Speaker Driver

To evaluate the sound quality of the Audio Nirvana Classic 8, the drivers were initially mounted to a rectangular open baffle panel. Using an active crossover the Classic 8 drivers were set to cover from about 175 Hz and up while the low frequency duties would be handled by an 18" Goldwood GW-1858 bass driver built into an H-frame open baffle box. The Classic 8 speaker drivers deliver a very smooth and extended response, and the fullrange drivers really do excel with all vocals and acoustic instruments. The overall balanced response makes the Classic 8 well suited for very long and even loud listening sessions without the onset of any listener fatigue which can be a common trait with fullrange drivers of this size.

The Classic 8 drivers resided in the open baffle speaker setup during the construction of a pair of CommonSense Audio Monitor MkII speaker boxes. When you purchase a set of Audio Nirvana drivers, you will be provided with a number of their speaker enclosure plans via email. The Monitor MkII is a bass reflex style speaker enclosure with a volume of about 1.5 ft3 (43 L) and external dimensions of 11.25" wide by 24" tall (~280 x 600 mm). The Monitor MkII speaker boxes were constructed using 19 mm birch multiplex plywood and using simple butt joint construction and no fasteners. The interior of the speaker box is carefully lined using R12 insulation and held in place with construction staples.

Once the Monitor MkII speaker boxes were completed, many different speaker positions were evaluated to find the best results. To begin the listening evaluations, the Classic 8 drivers in the Monitor MkII enclosures were set up on speaker stands and positioned a few feet (1 m) away from the rear and side walls. As could be expected, without wall and floor reinforcement, the speakers sound thin and forward and will require a baffle step compensation circuit in order to achieve a balanced in-room response. Re-positioning the speakers to take take advantage of the room corners resulted in improved bass and a more balanced response relative to the previous position, however the in-room bass response remained too lean while positioned on the speaker stands. Removing the speaker stands from the setup and placing the Classic 8 / Monitor MkII speakers directly on the ground provided a significant lift to the bass response. With the Monitor MkII speakers positioned right back into the room corners and on the floor, there was a surprisingly full bass and deep bass response from the single driver speaker system. To aim the speakers directly back towards the listening position, the speakers are titled slightly backwards and are set to rest on a 1-inch thick strip of plywood. With the sound reinforcement provided by the wall corners and the floor, the in-room response of the single driver speaker system was measured to be +/-5dB between 41 Hz and 14kHz. Impressive for a single 8" (200 mm) speaker driver in a medium sized enclosure. Naturally the bass is not chest thumping, but fast, tight and accurate. The strength of the Classics 8 drivers is a rich and natural sounding mid-range combined with a very smooth and extended response.
