Audio Nirvana Classic 5" Fullrange Speaker Driver

Audio Nirvana Classic 5" Fullrange Speaker Driver

The Audio Nirvana Classic 5" fullrange speakers are among the latest additions to the recently expanded product line of Audio Nirvana fullrange speaker drivers. As noted in the product name, the Audio Nirvana Classic 5 is a 5" diameter fullrange speaker driver with a nominal 8-ohm impedance. The Classic 5 speaker driver utilizes a paper cone and the dust cap is made from a specially coated fabric material. The speaker surrounds are an accordion style and made from a treated cloth with a tacky coating (Photograph 3). This style of speaker suspension has been know to result in a very long driver lifespan. The speaker voice coil diameter is 30 mm (1.2") and the datasheet notes the Rated Input at 30W and the Music Power at 50W. The weight of the large ferrite magnet is noted as 765 g (1.7 lbs) and the total weight of the Classic 5" speaker driver is a plump 1961 g (4.3 lbs). From the datasheet the Audio Nirvana Classic 5 speaker drivers are capable of an extended frequency response that can cover from about 73 Hz to 20 kHz. The driver excursion is noted as Xmax = 1.3 mm. The hefty Classic 5 speaker drivers are constructed around a solid black cast aluminum frame. The overall build quality of the speaker drivers appears to be excellent.

Audio Nirvana stickers proudly adorn the magnet and the back of the speaker. The speaker driver connectors are gold plated mini 5-way binding posts. Because of the very large speaker magnets on the Classic 5 drivers, and depending on the size of ones fingers, cinching down the speaker wire will require a little extra concentration and patience.

The Audio Nirvana Classic 5" cast frame fullrange speaker drivers arrived neatly packaged in moulded styrofoam and snug in cardboard box which indicated that the speakers had been manufactured in China. The speaker driver packaging also included a tight fitting rigid plastic cover that slips over the cast frame and can be later used to protect the driver cone from fingers when they are not in use. A driver datasheet was included as part of the speaker driver package. The speaker drivers were shipped to Canada from Missouri, USA and the parcel was double boxed and very well packaged.

Thiele/Small (T/S) Parameters - Audio Nirvana Classic 5"Fullrange Speaker Driver

The Thiele/Small Parameters of the Classic 5 speaker drivers have been measured using the Dayton Audio Test Systems (DATS). The T/S parameters derived from the small signal speaker testing as well as the parameters noted on the Audio Nirvana Classic 5 datasheet are summarized below in Table 1. The measured Thiele/Small parameters of the tested driver pair were very close to the specifications noted on the Classic 5 driver datasheet. The pair of Classic 5 drivers measured reasonably close to one another.

Sound - Audio Nirvana Classic 5" Fullrange Speaker Driver

To evaluate the sound quality of the Audio Nirvana Classic 5" paper cone fullrange drivers, they were mounted to a two-way open baffle system. Using an active crossover the Classic 5 drivers cover from about 200 Hz and up while the low frequency duties are handled by a 15" bass driver in an H-frame. Upon first listen to the Classic 5 drivers, a subtle, but clear overall improvement was noted relative to the Classic 4+ drivers which had resided in the open baffle system for the previous two months. It was difficult to pin point the specific improvements at first, but the Classic 5 drivers could generally be characterized as more open and natural sounding. The Classic 5 speaker drivers deliver a very smooth response throughout the bass and midrange and they really do excel with vocals and instruments. This balanced response makes the Classic 5 well suited for long and even loud listening sessions without the onset of any listener fatigue. Overall the Classic 5 speaker drivers are very well built and they deliver very natural sound reproduction.
