12AX7-Tube-Phono-Preamplifier.jpg12AX7 Vacuum Tube Phono Preamplifier4162 viewsOk, so after buying a Sansui SR-1050C Turntable, I needed a phono preamp, so I built one.

This one uses no premium parts, but sounds great. It does have a small amount of 60Hz hum, and I plan on installing some tube shields as I know its been induced by the power transformer as the PS is completely clean. The preamp uses a pair of 12AX7 vacuum tubes.

The power supply uses a MOSFET for regulation and the preamp uses a passive RIAA equalization network.

TSpecial.JPG6T9 4.7W DIY Tube Amplifier in a Baking Pan4138 viewsA Tube amp kit based on Spare Time Gizmo's printed circuit boards which are plated through, solder masked and screen printed. I sourced common components from the local electronics shop but used a pair of NOS GEC 6T9, Alps potentiometer, solid brass knob and a Hammond power transformer. The chassis is a Teflon coated backing pan ($7). The OPTs are custom wound toroidals. The amp is a little bass shy. Doubling the 100uF power caps helped increase bass. See the 6T9 Tube Amplifier Project for more details.

IMG_3492.jpgTesting of active crossover4104 viewsThe active crossover is using Rod Elliot's P09 design and is 24db/octave Linkwitz-Riley crossed at 3500Hz. Op amps are cheap TL072 and the sound is still great. Transients are not lost whatsoever.
Blue_Velvet_Pre_Amp.jpg
Blue_Velvet_Pre_Amp.jpgThe Blue Velvet Tube Pre-Amplifier4097 viewsMy second tube audio DIY project, The Blue Velvet tube Preamp by Dick Olsher.
The only changes from the original schematic is the use of a 6X5GT tube rectifier. This is an excellent preamp. The 6SN7 tubes by KENRAD gives deep lows and velvet mids - highs. Coupling caps are Mundorf Silver Oil 0.68μF.

IMAGE_145.jpgOne valve (tube) 60W guitar amplifier4068 viewsThis guitar amp comprises of one $1000 radio transmitter valve which runs on 700Volts. The driver cct. is on the left and is a multi-stage transistor unit. The OPT on the right was wound by the owner using a primary/secondary interlace config. and then vacuum impregnated. A fan is required at the base of the valve to stop the ceramic socket over-heating. Very loud!
Beyma-12XA30Nd-Speaker.jpg
Beyma-12XA30Nd-Speaker.jpgBeyma 12XA30Nd Speaker4066 viewsThese are the most expensive speakers I have made. Drivers are Beyma 12” with a titanium\polyester concentric 2” dome – 12XA30Nd. Efficiency is 98db\1W\1M for the woofer section and 105db for the tweeter. The drivers can handle 700W! Box is 33ltr and heavily braced with 4” rear port. Finish is heavily stippled and applied with a roller. Xover is at 2KHz. Bass is not super low and requires a subwoofer for better bass. Speakers work extremely well with my 0.5W 1920s tubed amp. See the forum thread Beyma, a Spanish coaxial driver for more information.

An Alps Blue Velvet potentiometer is topped off with a solid brass black chrome knob. The preamp is very smooth sounding and better than my earlier version which uses an AC supply and regulators on board. See the MM Phono Preamp (battery powered) - inside image for an internal sview.

Par-Metal_Case_ICEPower_1000ASP_modules.jpgPar-Metal Case with B&O ICEPower 1000ASP modules4021 viewsThis is a high power audio amplifier project that I recently completed. The amplifier used two B&O ICEPower 1000ASP modules. Each amplifier module is rated at 1000 Watts. The two amplifier modules are housed in a Par-Metal aluminum case. The amplifier sounds amazing with my Epos ELS303 speakers.

Prada_1.jpgPrada OPA627 Preamplifier4012 viewsUsing my daughter's Prada phone box (heavy cardboard) I fashioned this preamplifier around the Bur Brown (high performance) OPA627AP opamp ($AU50). It is a single stage preamp and powered by four lithium 9V batteries for a PS of 18V.

The black knob is solid brass and the attenuator is an Alps Blue Velvet. Gold RCA jacks, silver wire and WBT silver solder are used throughout.

Twinings.JPG12AX7 Valve Preamp in Twinings Tea box3992 viewsThis is the fourth 12AX7 tube based preamplifier kit I have built. A Twinings presentation tea box was used as the case (similar to my Gwado CMoy / Grado RA1 Headphone Amp) with a remote PS. Cardas caps were used, all pure silver wire, silver solder, Alps blue velvet attenuator and 4 oz brass knob. The rear has a terminal strip for all the connections and the case is lined with a tar and aluminum film. The power supply has speaker absorbing vinyl lining it to ensure the switch mode tranni remains quiet.
