Hi Mark, Great, I just looked closely at the paint color...I am building a stereo power amp and the chassis is cranberry. A virtual copy of the color you used. No photo yet and it will be a while to finish as I had to order the transformers.

Good listening
Bruce

Hi Mark, Nothing recent, apparently neither made it here. Curious.

Good listening
Bruce

Off thread but maybe I can ask it here. I built the Salt Cellar 807 Triode strapped Mono amp but any Ck on the 807 Rk kept shorting even when I used 100V caps. There is 25V of bias across Rk. I’m using the amp with no Ck and it soundis good but am I missing anything other than more gain and extra harmonics.

Probably some low end. Here is a comparison I did on the triode strapped 807 prototype with and without a 100µf cathode bypass capacitor.

This is with a 5kΩ load, an 800Ω Rk, and at a B+ of ≈400v. The difference is 5.6dB at 20Hz.

How much you'll hear this is dependent on the frequency content of the music to which you are listening.

Thanks. I’ll try with a Ck again. Not sure why they keep breaking down.

I’ve attached Ck - 470uf 63V elcrto and watch B+ and at this point all good. It may have been oscillation before as usually I attach Ck on Rk and never had a problem. This time I had connected it a little more remotely and after 20 seconds it would start to brake down. All good at the mo. If no problems over the next three hours of critical listening I’ll make it permanent directly across Rk.

Thanks for the help. I’m well into another Salt Cellar 6EM7 amp.

Got it all working good. Maybe a touch more bass but only maybe.

Here we go again.

A new preamp all completed in record time. Should be Ive probably made eight like this. Gooda lub the obby

Apart from having to replace a faulty RCA (Jaycar’s new RCAs - from last year - don’t solder. I think the center pin is steel and solder just balls up and won’t get a grip). I have put in a complaint but I didn’t think anyone looks at them. My last complaint never got answered.

Back to the preamp. Sounds detailed, laid back and smooth with the Psvane 12AU7 TIIs. Worked at first on.

Voltages are;
HT = 247V
bias = 2.44V
current = 5mA.

Im using a Radi0kit external PS kit. Regulated 12V and electronically smoothed HT. Turn it up and it’s dead quiet no hum, buzz, crackle, snap or pop. Looks and sound extremely good. Called it “Noir”.

Alps pot on the output, Russian PIO output caps and SRPP topology. Metal film resistors. Wood cheeks have been finished with a finishing oil. They really have lifted. Epoxy enamel paint on top of etching primer. Enjoying it now with my 2W 6L6 SE UL wine box amp.

It lives. This time with ECC83 tubes. Another illusion type preamp. But in a plastic jiffy box. Worked at first on. Big bold sound from the Gold Lion ECC83s. Apart from some small holes on the top left of the enclosure to allow some cooling from a filament limiting R “La Ruse” is complete.
