Assembled but not wired. The PS section and output section have been pre-assembled and mounted underneath.

Those who have been to my blog or own a copy of "Amp Book" know I don't always go for a traditional black top plate. This time I thought it would work well against the blond base. These RCA 6AS7s have been listed for over $100 each. I have four I bought years ago for a lot less. Genelex Gold Lion Gold E88CC pin up front and Alps pot.

Yes I think I'm just starting to get the hang of this DIY stuff.

Another simple two stage, direct linked headphone amp, Again using a RCA 6AS7 and this time a E88CC Genelex Gold Lion gold pin. Ceramic sockets, choked PS and a stunning Cyprus timber base. Alps Blue Velvet handles the volume levels and all Cat5 solid core copper wire hooks it all together.

Looks great sounds great and is quiet in operation. This proves once more that simple uncomplicated schematics can produce excellent sounding DIY gear and are easy to construct.

Of course the wooden base is made from Cypress not the country Cyprus. Silly me.

Interesting observations:

1 - The same Hammond tranni on this build doesn't get as hot. It still gets hot but here I can keep my hand on it. One possible reason is the two resistors straight from tranni feeding the two diodes are larger. 270 from 220ohm. These feed the first cap of 100uf (400V). The load on the tranni, each cycle, is lower. Also moving from the RCA 6AS7 to the Svetlana Wing C has appeared to have less filament current load.

2 - The two RCA 6AS7s appeared to be very microphonic. I simple and light tap on top of the tube would not only induce a thump through headphones but ringing followed by howling sounds. Well damped but predominant to start with. Moving to the Svetlana produced no more than a muffled thump when tapped. No ringing no howling. Also with the RCAs in some music quiet tracks the tube was noisy. In a power amp you would never hear it but on phones you hear everything. Also with the Svet. lower background noise. A much quieter tube.

The Genalex Gold Lion Gold pin E88CC/6922 (6V) is sublime. I couldn't use it Sanctum it lifted the background hum but in this amp no problems. I couldn't recommend a better tube and at $A80+ landed here it would want to be good. Again in a power amp other 12AX7 style tubes would sound good but when you are up-close and personal with the music andor even in preamp there is no better tube. I noticed just how outstanding this tube was in Sanctum and swore in the next build it definitely would be used. Not changing this one but it does limit tube roller with the 6V filament demands.

To say I'm enjoying this HP amp, Sanctorum, is an understatement. Only draw back is I cant use my Sennheiser 700s they are to sensitive and bring up background hum. But my excellent Beyerdynamic DT440 Pros (close back) both 32 and 250ohm are excellent with more bass. So not really losing much.

A little off thread. My Oatley K272Cs, modded and with upgraded parts and with a Burson V5-I semi-discrete OPAMP performs exceptional well considering price and componentry. It challengers Santorum and allows me to use my 700s. Oh the pain!

Just out of curiosity, have or would you test the 6080 in place of the 6AS7 for microphonic?
