Hi Matt,
I installed the 100ma DC current meter after the 100uf cap in series before it breaks up to the four filter caps as you suggested but the meter only reads 15mA then i looked at your build i have noticed that the negative is connected on the meter so i did the same this time the meter read 50mA then it blew the fuse.

Alex

The latest HP amp I built and posted on this site has given me all sorts of problems from a loud hum to over heating tranni. Fixed the hum and new tranni is on the way. But on some bassy tracks it can crackle (distorted) and I don't think a bigger tranni will fix it. When it plays without a problem 90% of the time it sounds excellent.

What I intend to do is gut it and build Matt's design. The designs share some similarity but I don't want to waste any more time. I have built this one before and it was perfect. All the voltages around the cct. etc. are correct but it distorts on some tracks. The amp draws less current than the tranni is rated in the HT but 2.8A on the filament winding for a rated 2.5A. Could this be the problem for distortion. Ill check filament voltage tomorrow. If I see it is very low then I may believe this could be the distortion source - but I doubt it!

I have mentioned on this thread my new HP amp (Sanctum) was showing some distortion. Well it appears my Pi music server and HDMI audio ripper was putting out over 2V thus overdriving the E88CC which is biased at 1.5V. By dropping the inout volume by 70% coming out of the Pi and bring up the volume on the Sanctum I now have distortion free listening.

Funny how on classical music I never heard a single note of distortion but on some jazz tracks and rock tracks it would appear. I'm going to upgrade the tranni then all should be fine.

Sorry a little off thread.

That looks like a CRACK clone:)

Speaking of tranny overheating i accidentally left the HP amp ON for 48 hours we left and i forgot to turned it OFF came back two days later the dang thing still playing i don't think if it's over heated i shut it down flipped it over if anything smells or looks like burnt but found no signs of any heat issue.
