My gut told me the amp was just a little edgy. Like it was being strained a bit even at low levels. What was very obvious was the distortion and resonance sound of horns and some voices. My gut also told me "cut away the bypass caps on the 6SN7". Always follow your gut. I cut away the 100uf bypass caps and instantly no resonance and no edginess. The basic characteristics of the amp are unchanged there is just better control. Even at high vol. levels, no strain and no distortion.

Suncalc's original schematic had no bypass caps on the driver tube. I would suggest strongly if you build his amp leave the caps off. Put in the 5K blocker to the 6V6 grid and any other tweaks but leave off the caps. The difference in gain is minimal.

Now I'm even more happy. Wife's out the this arvo so a big music afternoon with the improved Black Lace.

Mark;

You are 100% correct. I never got around to updating my lacewood amp with those bypass caps. I just kept thinking that I had left them out for a reason. Then I remembered that you asked me that question a couple of years ago (answered here) so I went back and read it again. Yes, with the low load resistance on the 6SN7 the NFB added by cathode degeneration really cleans up the stage.

Hopefully, one day I will learn not to tinker with what works. :blush:

It may sound odd but this amp sounds better when playing LPs instead of CDs. I have been playing a lot of vinyl lately and noticed the whole amp\system appears to sound a lot better with vinyl than CDs with Black Lace in place.

Also with one of the latest Cayin (CS-100A) power amps they brag about carbon film resistors and EI OPTs. I guess I was ahead of my time with this amp in a retro-sort-of-way.
