I was wondering if anyones tried different tubes in their K12G/M kits. They come stock with 10GV8's of an indeterminate brand... are there "better" tubes by other manufacturers that people have found sound better? I can't really find much info on the sonic properties of various brands of these tubes as I think they're mostly used in TV's. |

The 6GV8, 8GV8, 9GV8 & 10GV8 are all the same, but with 6, 8, 9, & 10 volt filaments, respectively. The closest equiv I could find was the ELC85, but it is 6v filament. This tube fall in the catagory of a compactron, which were "design specific", meaning they had a specific purpose. This tube combines a triode and power pentode in one package. Best information I've found; http://tubedata.milbert.com/sheets/030/e/ECL85.pdf |

From what I can tell the 10GV8 tube (supplied with the K-12G kit) and the 11MS8 (supplied with the K-12M kits) apear to be quite similar, so they should both work in the kits. The 11MS8 are getting harder to find and more expensive which I understand is the reason for the tube change. If you take a look both the schematics:
Hope this helps. Cheers |

For the 11MS8 I went through the stock set provided with the K-12M tube amp kit and replaced them with a set of International Servicemaster brand. I did not do a comparison between the two because the stock tubes were old. Cheers |
