I am trying to identify the musical worth of black bodied 6V6GTs. I have received three large boxes of very old valves over the last few weeks and have been sorting and listening to (where possible) the valves I can identify.
Of the most prized (from my point of view) have been some very old 5U4GBs - Australian made and 5Y3s (rec. tubes). But I also have about 9 black bodied 6V6GTs. These are quite squat valves. In fact some are slightly smaller than others. I managed to find two batch matched pairs from two different manufactures. One being Radiotron and the other Mullard both Australian made. Both of these pairs of valves work and I have listened briefly to both pairs on my SE UL valve power amp.
The valves appear to be painted or sprayed black inside to the point where you cannot identify the elements within. It is even hard to tell if they are on.
Can someone shed some light on these interesting valves and pass comment on their audio qualities.

I thought I would add an image of one of the two matching pairs of 6V6GTs I have.I have been listening to this pair for a while and they sound excellent.

Nice find Mark. Gald to hear you are enjoying them. Black glass seems to be pretty popular on the 6V6GT: http://images.google.ca/images?q=black+ ... afe=active

I've got four Russian 6V6 - 6P6S. Haven't decided what to do with them but a simple PP-amp would be nice.

Hi. Realise this is an old thread. Locally made AWV's, Mullard's and Phillips black 6V6's are mainly prized by guitar amp builders here in Oz.
Good little sweet sounding valve. Evatco up in the state of Queensland, www.evatco.com.au would be a good source if you are after some more Australian made valves.
The photo is of a few in my collection.

Cheers

I got three boxes of the very old valves recently and in one were two matched (manufacture and production number) pairs and 5 olds 6V6 Australian made black glass. All good and as you said very sweet sounding. I have been commissioned to building a guitar amp for a local guy (Karingal Southern Victoria) who owns an original 1976 Australian made Maton. He has a couple of amps but feels he is not getting the best out of a VERY nice guitar.

We spoke of cct. designs (Gibson/Fender) and in the end I'm basing the build heavily on the Fender Champ 5F1. Three stage with 6V6 power tube. I'm going to make it UL/triode switchable and have NFB selection.

A nice SE UL amp for the den would be a good start. By the way of all the 6AS7 schematics you sent me I found one I like. So don't be surprised if I post a thread on the build soon. I have a timber/Al chassis all lined up and ready to go.

Thank your mother for the rabbit!

I did a listening test between half a dozen brands and those won hands down :D

Cheers!
