I'm looking for suggestions for a very low-noise tube to be used at the front end of a high-gain audio amp (back-end of a direct-conversion receiver).

The EF86 looks promising... it actually has specs for noise and microphonics. RCA used a 6J7 in their classic gain-of-9000 R-C preamp. And I even have some used WE 416B's for whatever they're worth.

Maybe a triode would be the best choice... less partition noise?

Check out the Germans C3g, C3m. They were made for long-life operation and ultra low noise.
