Welcome to the forum.
Here is some experience with CD players I have had.
I'm using NAD C521i (CD player) in my rec room. That unit is built well and the plan is to mod the first time it requires maintenance! I have some old links (or archived pages) for CD mods I'll post when I dig them up to give you some ideas. The NAD C541i is another good one too, but these still have decent resale value.
Another unit I have experience with is a Oppo BDP-83 (Blu-Ray/SACD). I sold my unit to a friend and every time I go over and see or hear it, I regret it to this day. There are some good documented mods for this unit. These units probably still have good to high resale value.
I've found 1990s Phillips CD players to be very reliable mechanically and with the laser. The changer platter seals very well and stays dust free and clean. The Philips TDA1541/A DAC is a classic. The weak part is the output stage so that makes this a good one to mod and they are inexpensive and abundant.
