Hi, I'm a beginner to building big audio systems, but I like projects so i'm currently building a set of Adam's 1.618 - 3-Way Hi-Vi Tower Speakers.
Now I understand that I will need an AMP or receiver that can drive these speakers at 4 ohms, and since I only have an old Sony STR-DE485 that I picked up at an estate sale, I think I need to buy a new one.

So I have been reading around, and after a bit of research, an Emotive UPA-5 sounds like a good idea (future expansion). However, since money is a bit tight at the moment, I am thinking I should buy an old receiver off eBay in the range of $150 to $350, then upgrade later.

So I need a recommendation on an old, but good receiver that will drive these speakers, or an AMP amp that will work with the Sony and I can upgrade the Sony later, or should I skip the separate AMP and just buy a good receiver now?

Help, please!

how much power do you think they would need? a crown amp would be good to drive them and you can get new in the price range you are looking at.

For my HT amp I was using a STR-DE585 and it did not like a 4 ohm load at moderate levels. If you go with 4 ohm speakers, you will want to make sure you have a amp that is capable of driving the load.
Cheers and welcome to the forum.

Are you looking for a 2 channel amp? If so, and you want something that can handle a variety of loads, then a proton d-540 integrated amp would work just fine. At 4ohms, it would be about 80 watts. It can handle down to about 1.2ohm speakers if I am not mistaken, although I have never seen a speaker that low. They also made a power amp as well.

If you look carefully you can often find some of the mid 70's Marantz receivers at a good price. The ones like the 2250 and 2265 would be great. Get the ones before about 1979 though as Sony bought the company and they went down hill for a long time. Often the switches will need to be cleaned with something like de-oxit. The pilot lights can be an issue as well so make sure they work or else you will have some issues depending on model as to how easy they are to replace (some are cartridges and some are soldered). I have a 1060, 2250 and 2265B. All are quite excellent and if I didn't use all tube electronics they would be my go to gear.

Good listening
Bruce
