Post subject:  Reasonable quality component for diy vacuum tube amps

i recently assembled a chinese ebay kit 300b amp in which all the small components were included. i thought now i have put that together I might upgrade the power supply, signal path caps and resistors if this would improve the sound. i’m not looking to upgrade to the unobtanium quality but would there be advice available here on brands of sufficient quality components for the average DIYer? In my amp the brands used include vishay and sam young electrolytics, solen mkp coupling caps and not sure what brand resistors or bridge rectifiers for filaments have been used. i have heard subsequent to buying this kit it’s common practice to sell fake brands on ebay so i don’t mind changing the lot for peace of mind.

Hi, A loaded question for sure. If not fakes Solen and Vishay are ok. I use them in some of my builds. For other good ones I like Audyn TrueCopper Caps, followed by Auricaps, Russian FT-4 , Audyn Caps Plus (rather nice for an inexpensive cap IMO), Russian K40-Y9. For transformers my go to source is Edcor USA. BTW the Audyns and FT-4 are huge physically.

Thanks Bruce. will follow up. Are their any particular resistors to favour/avoid for vacuum tube amps? No loaded q’s from me just noob ignorance and a bewildering number of choice and price ranges on mouser etc.

Hi, I find that most resistors from well regarded sources to be fine. Oddwatt Kits use KOA Speer ones and that seems satisfactory for most folks. Recently I built a project with Takman Resistor 1W REX resistors from PartsConnection. The cost was reasonable and they may be better.....since it was in a prototype project I can't really compare it to any of my other amps. A number of folks like them. I would pass on really expensive ones. I have not found most to be worth the cost YMMV.

I favour Vishay Dale RN/CMF series metal film resistors for my DIY builds, good quality & price.
