Hi guys,

If the design calls for a 50K log pot, and I use a 10K log pot instead, would my usable volume be increased if I turn the pot from 8 o'clock to 10 o'clock position ?

Would my speakers play louder with the 10K pot ?

Short answer, no they will not play louder.

Regardless of the resistance of the potentiometer, when wide open (max volume) both will have a resistance of 0 and will therefore will play at the same level.

But at the same position setting, say 10 o'clock, the 10k pot will be louder because it will be of lower resistance relative to a 50k pot at the 10 o'clock position/.

This page offers a real good overview of the use of potentiometers with audio circuits: http://sound.westhost.com/pots.htm
Cheers

Ah that's great. I prefer to use more of the volume range earlier in the rotation.
