Post subject:  Replacing the guts of an old AM/FM car stereo

Hello,

I've been looking around for some information on this, and haven't been able to find an answer. I have an old radio in my '73 Volvo that is very fragile and expensive to repair. I've found a broken radio and was wondering if there was any way to take out the guts of the broken radio and replace them with more reliable components, while keeping the manual tuning mechanism. Is that sort of thing possible?

Thanks,
-Fran

Yes, it may be possible. Really all you may need to do is replace the electrolytic capacitors and clean the contact switches and pots. Can you post a photo of the radio insides?

Hi, My experience doing that sort of thing is never again. The components seldom fit correctly and it is nearly impossible to make the proper internal connections. With many brands of car radios available from about $30 to thousands that will fit in the same location as the factory ones and have install kits that make them look really professional I would just get a new one. There are some additional advantages ....more reliable, two often more power output and better response, new features like USB and chip inputs, blue tooth connectivity and digital tuning. All reasons I gave the guts swapping a long time ago.

Good listening
Bruce
