Not sure if I'm posting in the right place, if not please forgive me.

I'm getting a lot of pops, clicks and thumps through my system. It is very frustrating and I am concerned may be damaging for my equipment. I have a simple mains suppresser fitted using a couple of VDRs and motor-run capacitors but the noise still gets through. Do any of you have a circuit for a decent mains suppressor? I prefer to make my own rather than buy one. I am based in the UK, 240v mains, 3 wire: Live, Neutral and Earth.

With thanks.

You need some series noise suppression; series inductance is the answer.

Since I don't know if your noise is common mode or not, you could try a 100µH choke in the hot line of the mains supply like this one: https://www.radioshack.com/collections/chokes-and-transformers/products/radioshack-100-h-rf-choke. Or, if that doesn't work, you can try adding a common mode 100µH choke like this one: https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/kemet/SC-02-D100/399-10763-ND/4290829.

The bottom line is you need some in-line inductance. Simple shunt elements will protect you from voltage spikes, but not noise.

Can you post a schematic of your current mains noise suppression circuit?

Thanks Matt,

I'll try the inductor and see where that gets me.
My existing suppression is simply a VDR and a motor run capacitor between live-neutral and live-earth.

The motor run cap may well be a significant part of your problem. Disconnect it and see if the sound improves.

B.t.w... what's the value of the capacitor?

There is a good article / Schemetic / project here: http://www.dms-audio.com/audio-mains-filter-circuit
I have something similar, but I made it with standard chokes not with common mode chokes.
It works great - you can hear an improvement
