Post subject:  Interconnect Cable 6mm to 8mm Bulk

I'm seeking a source for high quality 6mm and or larger interconnect cable. I would like to build my own cables using RCA and XLR connectors for connecting my High-End equipment together. My current cheap big box cables are showing too much leakage resulting in excess hum I.e. ground loop noise. Thank you in advance with any suggestions.

Hi For cables you might try http://www.markertek.com. They carry a lot on different cables in bulk. However....if your problem is ground loop induced hum changing the cables will not stop it. Ground loop hum occurs when there are multiple ground paths to the same place. It can be through the AC mains, chassis grounds, or between gear that has both shielded cables and separate ground wires. There can be other routes as well. I had a difficult to find one through the cable TV connection to my FM tuner. (my solution there was to get rid of the tuner as I never listened to it ) See the tech section of the website as I have a fairly general discussion of grounding and shielding there. If your hum is not ground loop induced then a better cable can often help. Some cheap cables have as little as 40% shielding. Anything below about 75% is likely inadequate for most uses. I like Mogami shielded instrument wire and there are lots of choices in it. The actual physical diameter is not necessarily an indication of better shielding. I have some that is barely over 1/8 inch in diameter, but it has 90% plus of copper shielding and it works just fine - even on my LOMC cartridges with their signals in the range of 0.3 mv. I also have a very high level of EMI in the house. It has electric heat tapes in the ceilings and when they are on the 60HZ noise level in unshielded gear can be substantial. My system (rather complex) is dead quiet. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I expect the noise floor to be at least -90 db. I really hate hum and noise.

Good listening
Bruce

Larger cable == larger capacitance == more component instability. Just so you know ;)

I use and sell (by way of a disclosure) Gotham Cable. If you're having RFI or induced hum problems this will work exceedingly well for you.
It's quite inexpensive too.
