Post subject:  shielding for low level AC line?

I would like to have thoughts on shielding on low level (18VAC) power lines. I have an outlaw audio bass management box (used as a 2-way xover) which has an outboard (wort) power supply. It has a very 'wimpy' input supply line. As I have upgraded all other power cords to shielded, I was wondering if I could benefit from attaching shielding material to the input line to prevent RFI/EMI interference to the unit? And if so, what recommendations you all have for doing this.

Hi jdh - welcome to the forum.

I like to use shielded AC power cables. I connect the shield only to the power source ground. When you have signal wire near AC cables, try to cross the wires at 90 degrees and never run the wires parallel to each other.

Gio,

Thanks for the reply... The configuration of my Wart is 2 prong Wart--->(2-wire 18VAC small guage (22?)---> small 1/8" female plug ---->unit.
Since I don't have a ground from the Wart, my thinking was to wrap the 18VAC line with some sort of shielding wrap and then attach to an 3 prong plug with a ground tang on the Wart plug-in side. (adapter is between Wart and receptacle). I can't think of any other way unless I can find a 3 prong 18VAC wart with same type of 1/8" plug to unit. I've looked but to no avail.

Any additional thought?

Thanks,

In that case, yes, that is your only option to shield the wire. Other option to consider is twisting the conductor tightly much like one would do to and AC tube heater supply. This will reduce a lot of the AC noise. Since you are likely not pushing too much current, twisting the lines is likely more than sufficient.

Cheers
