For reasons best known to a bottle of wine I ordered a Digikey metal chassis the ones with the wooden cheeks (sides). It will cost a bit over $70 landed as the Ozzie dollar is strong against the yanky dollar. Not sure what I'm going to do with the chassis but I thought I would order one just to see what they are like.

I have seen a few projects where these chassis have been used. My amp building buddy, Don, who makes my speaker boxes and beautiful wooden bases for amps, usually charges me $80. So no big cost advantage. Don's bases, though, are beautifully crafted and the timber is Australian Spotted Gum so a much more unique base. But I'll take a Digikey and see what comes of it.

Hi, Yeah, done that before. I tend to use red oak for my wood based builds, also bamboo.

Good listening

That was quick. The chassis arrived today. Small compact and of very light Al. Now what to do with it.

I sent a kit to Bruce once and it took three months. We figured it got list in some back room of a Russian Post office. All American Post goes via Russia doesn't it?

Yeah no one really realizes the madness that possesses a person with an ebay password and a nice bottle of Cab. The moment when you realize that you MUST have that Sound of Music collectable plate and you find yourself in a death spiral with "VonTrappFamilyLover"....... Oh the horror......

So does the chassis seem to be pretty good quality? About how much weight would you trust it to hold as far as iron goes?

The metal is very thin but I think a preamp will go OK on it. A spray paint job will have it looking a lot better and the wood sides will come up well.

Mark is that a Hammond you are talking about? Which one did you get? The Hammond do come in black with walnut as well.
