Have you tried taking the motor belt off then placing the needle on the record? This might help showing if the "hum" is mechanically being induced from the drive motor section. Also if you can get a large piece of felt to place under the record while turning it would show if the "hum" is from the platter bearing and or the rubber mat currently supplied by the manufacture.
Great idea. Never thought of removing the belt to know if it’s mechanical or electrical noise from the motor. I’ll try this out next time I work on it. For now I use my Hitachi PS33 wich I never really got to use before. Very surprised of this table considering the 50$ I paid for it. It is dead silent compared to my thorens. It runs a bit fast though. Need to get a belt for it...
Back to the thorens. After looking more closely at the tonearm, I realize that I am getting into a really tricky job. Thorens connectors between the arm and headshell are not the standard SME kind. Everything is held in place by metal pins that need to be punched out, and from what I’ve read, it’s very difficult to reuse the connector without breaking it. I’m looking for replacement connectors but can’t find anything.
Also. KAB superflex litz wires are REALLY thin. 34 gauge 40 strands makes for really thin and flexible wires. Dont even know how i’ll skin the insulation without cutting the wires lol
