Hello!
I would like the forum members opinion about Passive RIAA or Active RIAA Eq. Which one is better?
From the tone controls diagrams I have found out that a passive tone correction should be with less distorsion and not so noisy.

This is a "Which religion?" question ;)

There's great sounding phono preamps that use either. Topology can have a lot to do with which is better for noise or overall performance.

Each sounds different, too. Despite testing perfectly identical, you can have major sonic differences in soundstage, depth, DDR (Downward Dynamic Range), vibrance, etc.

My advice is always listen to several and decide which one you like.

Cheers!

Thank You!

What about the well known Le Pacific? I realised it and it works very fine as simple as it is.

I realised an electronic romanian kit with 3 transistors and active RIAA and it was a really dissaster.

I've heard the LePacific and is a great sounding stage. I'd take it over an op-amp one for my personal listening :)

It's sensitive to the type of caps for its personality. WIMA are too clinical and stale for me, but some like painfully accurate. With Panasonic ECWF(x), it's warm. With Vishay, it's lively.

Don't worry yourself over, "Oh, you need 0.01% polystyrene caps..." as in my experience, there's a couple of secrets to RIAA stages... 1) a modern 3 or 5% cap will be tighter than a 1% of 40 years ago and 2) channel balance is far more critical than perfect EQ ;)

Try them all and see which you like!

Cheers!

Also, I did an experiment with a circuit like that one you posted - try Nichicon UFG (Fine Gold) electrolytics and BC549C/BC550C/KSC1845Y for that first transistor.... it tain't that bad!
