Accidentally I found on the Internet that before vinyl apparition was used the shellac until the '50s on the western countries and until the '70s on the eastern countries.

Which one is better? Which sounds more naturally?

Only the 78 rpm records are made from shellac? All 78 rpm records are made from shellac?

How to clean a shellac record? Is it different?

How can I find out if a disc is made from vinyl or shellac let's say?

A shellac record does use RIAA standard or not?

If playing the shellac record does it suffer a "peeling" by needle which sediments on it?

I would say all 78 are made from shellac. Don't clean them with alcohol, the 78 will dissolve in front of your eyes. A record cleaner with a water, detergent based cleaner should be ok.

I have a 78 piezo cartridge (Ronette) and piezo preamp and for the few reasonable 78s I have it sounds OK. I beleive there is a European firm printing new 78s. I'm trying to find the site.

All 78 were cut for piezo cartridges. There is no equalisation and only cartridges designed for 78s will give the best from the shellac.

Hi There were several recording curves. A Google search will find them with out any problem. They also used a variation of Bakelite. I had a few a long time ago. They weighed about 500-1000gms each.

Good listening
Bruce
