What do you think about rear firing tweeters? Any good and, why would you do it and if you did how would you set them up?

All comments welcome.

Hi Mark,

I remember my buddy had some old school Cerwin Vega speakers had a rear firing (piezo?) tweeter.

For DIY, here is a good link to read:

My preference for super tweeters is to use an external unit as opposed to fixed. That way you can point it whatever direction you like.

I have used super tweeters on the rear of speakers to add some "air" and "sparkle". Much like is shown with the Fullrange Pioneer link above. I am not found of the sound from a piezo, however, they are only a few dollars. Personally, I would suggest something like the Fostex FT17H horn super tweeter, which runs about $40. You will want to use an L-Pad to adjust the level.

As Gio has suggested, using an external tweeter provides you with a lot more flexibility.

APEXJR at www.apexjr.com has some ribbon tweeters for $5 each. You may be able to find talk of them in the archives of DIYaudio.

Mark is in Australia, so Apex is not really an economical option.

As mentioned, the Fostex FT17H is good and you should be able to find it in AU. Mount it in a small box (perhaps a tiny shadow box), add a small cap and you have a nice external super tweeter.
