I'm helping my brother in law with a project.
He inherited this:

We want to gut it and install modern electronics. I can handle everything else we want to do but I have concerns about the speakers. The front grill area is about 5.5" x 13.5". The side firing drivers are 10". It is basically an open baffle.
I was thinking about just making a new front plate and using these drivers.

With the 10 being side firing, I figure we wouldn't want anything above about 150hz going to them. I would need help designing a crossover for it.

The other idea I had was just forgoing the side speaker and putting in a front ported/vented speaker like the bottom design here:

Thoughts?

Seems simple enough, and your plan does have similar virtues.

Some ideas here: http://www.linkwitzlab.com/proto.htm

Retain the Magnavox components - they have a following and may net you some cash for the upgrade.

Both those drivers will work well in an open baffle configuration (high Qts). That 10" will not work well in a box. Since you are ordering from PE you can also consider premade low and high pass filters. http://www.parts-express.com/cat/assemb ... sovers/308

I've got a gutted console and I was thinking of a bluetooth receiver or something so be sure to post details of your build as I'll be fishing for ideas.

With the 10 being side firing, how low should I cross it over?
To be honest, I'm leaning more towards putting in the front ported, full range driver speaker.

To match up with the 5" fullrange, I would lean towards 180 or 200Hz. If you want to go with a box, a lower Qts driver would work better. This is a good inexpensive 4.5" driver that is better suited towards a sealed box. http://www.parts-express.com/grs-4fr-8- ... m--292-434
