This is my first post so mind my newbie nature. I'm curious if these speakers would be appropriate without the use of a high efficiency amp. I have an early 70's Pioneer SX-9000 (transistor) I would be powering these with. I think approximately 60w @ 8ohm and 85w @ 4ohm.

This project appeals to me because of the incredibly simple nature of it. I'm assuming I will likely build multiple projects and I'm very keen to start one without a crossover. I love how simple the box is as well. Hopefully they are workable for my amp.

Thanks in advance for the advise!

Steve

These speakers will work well with any amp. Tubes amps may sound better than SS amps though. That's just my opinion.

Thanks for the advise. I've learned to take my obsessive hobbies one step at a time. If the speakers work out, maybe a tube amp!

A few other questions.

1. I don't suppose anyone has already converted these plans to yankee measurements eh? :-)

2. What the what is dacron poly fill? Is this it? http://www.amazon.com/Acousta-Stuf-Polyfill-1-lb-Bag/dp/B0002ZPLDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357703302&sr=8-1&keywords=dacron+fill

I've can't tell if I'm looking for a more pillowy substance or a roll or sheet like stuff.

3. bituminous aluminium foil? I'm sure this is old hat for everyone on this forum but I'm not sure if this is just HVAC duct tape on top of a roofing barrier? When I search bituminous I get lots of results for roofing underlayments like what we call ice and water barrier. Thicker than standard tar paper and used under low pitched roofs. Just looking for some guidance on this.

Thanks

Dacron is a brand name of polly fill. Acousta Stuf is a good choice also.

For damping the driver, take a looks at this page that outlines some modifications and tweaks for the Fostex FE206En fullrange speaker driver.

Bigtigmn,

One more thing. Don't order from Amazon for $16. Parts Express and Madisound have it for under $11. What country are you in?

Cheers

What does everyone think of the sides and top being a little deeper? I don't want to change the volume of the cabinet but ideally the front face of the cabinet would be recessed just enough to place a Speaker cloth frame. I plan to likely laminate hardwood veneer on this.

Sort of like this.

That will be fine. The driver will not protrude much beyond the front baffle so you won't need to go much past the baffle.
