Post subject:  building column speakers?

I'm new to the board and new to speaker building - I'm having difficulty finding a set of speakers that will fit nicely in my living room so I've been considering building my own.

I'm good with woodwork and electronics, so I don't see that as a major challenge - but I know nothing about cabinet design! I've tried a few online programs designed to give dimensions, etc, but I have a fairly good idea of what shape/size I want.. just no idea what loudspeaker configuration would work best. I really want them to sound good.

I have a relatively square room, about 5 metres square, with space to fit speakers in the corners of the room. The seating position is in the center of the room.

For now, I'm only thinking about the front speakers - I really need to mount them on the walls and I don't have a great deal of flexibility in size, so what I'd like is something that is fairly narrow, not very deep, but they can be pretty tall. I like the idea of building a column speaker with several small speakers in a row, however from my (limited) understanding, this can introduce an interference pattern which renders the speakers pretty rubbish unless you're sitting a fair way away from the speakers. Is this true?

I think I'd like either a column speaker I can mount angled inwards to the room on a bracket, or some shallow speakers that can be mounted flush to the wall. They have to be wall mountable as I've used all the floor space, although I do currently have a subwoofer in the room so deep bass can possibly be handled by that.

Does anyone know of any good speakers designs that are less than 20cms deep and wall mountable? Or is the depth going to be too much of a limiting factor?

Sorry, I know you wanted to build, but what comes to my mind first is the Magnepan MMG W. They sound incredible and are only 300 a pair. They are , well I could go on and on, but Maggies are awesome and so are these.
You wont probably build wall speakers that will sound this good for anywhere near this price.

Wow, I can't tell you how much I've been looking for something like this before giving up and deciding to build my own!

The only problem is I'm in the UK - which is probably why I haven't heard of them before. I don't know of a UK dealer for these and the Magnepan website doesn't seem to list any.

I still kind of like the idea of building my own, I'm into retro-style stuff so I had an idea of building some sort of cabinet to my own tastes, but these look like they would blend in really well on my walls. Will definitely give it some thought if I can find some way to get them delivered over here.

Thanks :)

No sweat Chris. I can tell you that I listened recently to many full range driver speakers and some Maggies all in the same room, same equipment, same song, same sound level. The Maggies best everything in clarity, space, man everything. They are truly fantastic speakers.
