Hi everyone,

First off awesome site, with loads of info and great pictures etc.

I'm thinking off building/ buying my own portable headphone amplifier. I've got a set of Beyerdynamics DT990 Pros (250 ohm) headphones on the way and would like to power them properly, when using my laptop. What design in the forum would some of you suggest, or what USB amp/DAC would you suggest? I've got a sinking suspicion that my USB post is quite noisy but I've got a DC 19 V, 1.58 A spare adapter.

Also, have any of you designed an amp with TI's tpa6120a2 stereo amp? (

Thanks and check laters!

A few things:
a) Most computer/streaming sources are no better than they should be. Meaning that the on-board amp for your sound card will provide sound that is "as good as it gets" to your headphones. Additional amplification will only exacerbate the already-existing noise.

Unless you are using a digital output from your computer that requires a DAC to translate, I am not sure you will realize any gain from that option. And if you are going this way, you will be outside the DIY capacity of most individuals. And, these beasts are available off-the-shelf from the usual sources - AMAZON for instance. Look up this one as a typical option: FiiO E17 Alpen Portable Headphone Amplifier USB DAC.

Yes, I am preaching heresy to push you away from DIY in this instance, but the brute reality is that unless you are one of the few and very skillful, you will have an expensive bag of parts when done, and the ready-made options are plentiful.
