The golden ears weren't all that impressed with Mr Chips. But a strange spin off is that he liked my Fostex Speakers in listening area #3.

@Gio: Thanks for the advice. It is actually easier for me to lower Rf. Is this a valid gain reducer?? What about dropping it to 15K for a gain of 23db. Is there a consequence I have not foreseen?

That should be fine too. Just note that as you drop gain the amp will be more unstable especially as you start to approach 10dB. Use cheap test speakers until you are happy with the results. Another option as you already noted is to use a tube buffer with less than unity gain.

Cheers

I only want to drop it about 6 db or so. I added a couple of 50K resistors to the output of my phono (BHL) preamp and using a 12AU7 has helped a lot.

I built three single stage tube preamps to see if the sound from SynergyII\Cu could be improved. Some liked the sound of my system with the BoZSE SS preamp. I built a 4S Universal - 4SUTea, then a 6N7 - Heavy Metal (tube) and finally the C3m (tube) - Menatzchim.

I did listen for a while the 4SUTea preamp and chip amp combo, and then the Heavy Metal\ chip amp combo. Heavy Metal and SynergyII\Cu was by far the best combo. But only now have I had the chance to listen to Menatzchim and SynergyII\Cu. Though only a brief listen I have a feeling the Heavy Metal\SynergyII\Cu combo is the best. The audition has come about by the fact my 300B amp has dropped a channel so the chip amp is back! I will get a chance to do some serious listening in the next few days and make a note here.
