Hello theloon,

I wouldn't use a ground plane for this audio device.
Here are a few articles about grounding in audio circuits:

HI Guys and Girls,

After some troubleshooting, if i short the valve input and output pins (IE 7 + 6) the audio sounds fine with no distortion and at the volume of the output input rather. would you agree that this suggests my valve is kaput?

Should the eagle files under the heading: Additional information for the NP-100v12 - 12AU7 / IRF510 HeadAmp posted on the first page of this thread, "Schematic CadSoft Eagle format - 24 Jan 2011" be removed or at least noted, Do Not Use?

I used Rupert Hirsts Layout and it works great. A Regulated Power Supply and a 555 based headphone delayed on circuit on a 160x100mm board.

Layout: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ruperthirs ... type6c.pdf

All files: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ruperthirs ... 20Headamp/

How does this answer the question posted by me in reply to your statement?

Hello theloon,

I just wouldn't use it, although it could work.
Just want to help.

edit: Ferdinand's layout does not use a ground plane. He wrote the board is single sided, so I guess he made a star ground connection.

I'm sure your intentions are good but could you open the posted files with eagle, choose the board file then the rats nest command or click it's icon and tell me what you see, definitely a ground plane. You can also tell by the polygon named GND on the bottom layer.
Most of us have basic knowledge of ground traces, planes and the like, and they are necessary sometimes but sometimes it makes no difference how they are run, star, ground pour, Analog separated from Digital ground whatever.
I can't go with an "I guess" I have to stick with what I see with my own two eyes, but thank you for your input.
You may want to query the author about his choices though.

I recently built this on a proto board, It powers up and bias is fine 6V per channel, but when I put audio through the circuit the instruments are very loud, and the voices sound like they're underwater, quiet, and like really airy. I've tried both 12au7 tubes I have on hand, same issue. Other than that the circuit is quiet and seems to work. Any ideas what would cause the voices to sound so odd?
